Deserved try to Napier. Nick Ennor scores.

    Afa Moleli converts.

Napier Boys lead 14 to 10.

    It's over!

Napier Boys' win the Hurricanes Cup! Totally unexpected before the game, but they fully deserve it. Dominated most of the game. It almost looked as Hastings Boys had already celebrated their end-of-season. Just not there mentally, it seems. Napier Boys' set piece was miles better and their passes stuck. Hastings Boys' defence was good, but they also gave away a lot of penalties.

FT: Napier Boys 14 - 10 Hastings Boys

Strange idea, but if there had been a Top 4 this year, this result would have meant that Napier Boys', and not Hastings Boys', would have represented the Hurricanes region (assuming that both Napier and Hastings would have beaten the Wellington schools).

Well that's ruined my day. 😠

I'm going to anger walk to my picnic today.

In hope it's not a pointer to how the rest of the weekend's rugby is going to go!

@nepia Maybe it gives Brad Weber some inspiration to do something great tonight! 🤞🏼

You may be right about the rest of the games though. Totally against the run of play, the Tui are trailing against Taranaki. Taranaki lead 19 - 7 at half time. ☹

    Edit: and our U19s were murdered by Wellington: 7 - 42. 😧

According to an article in the HBT, Napier Boys will see 7 boys from their 1st XV graduating this year. Unfortunately, it doesn't say how many players Hastings Boys 1st XV will lose at the end of the year.

Not sure where else to post this, but the Ross Shield tournament is back and starts on Monday, 4 October 2021.
The usual teams: Central HB, Hastings West, Wairoa, Dannevirke, Napier and Hastings East.

All games to be livestreamed on sideline live.

The Wakely Shield tournament starts on Tuesday, 12 October and may also be livestreamed (not sure).

@nepia Can't remember. Maybe a "left-overs" from other area teams, just like the Saracens? Or players from the rural areas that are too small to form a team by themselves?

Wow, Hasting Boys lost 12 - 20 to Feilding HS, today, in their first preseason game!

This is the match report from FAHS:

The FAHS Feilding High School 1st XV recorded a hard fought 20-12 win over the Hastings Boys’ High School 1st XV at Feilding High School this afternoon. Our first win against this strong Boys’ High School side in a number of years.

Hastings opened the scoring via their rangy lock Josh Leach which remain unconverted. A tight tussle through the first half with neither side really dominating possession or territory. Feilding took a shot at goal near the end which missed but remained in the HBHS 22 and from a lineout drive – prop Josiah Johnston burrowed through for a try which was converted by Mosese Palelei.

Leading at the half 7-5 and playing into a slight breeze in the second half Feilding kicked two early penalties by Mosese Palelei to take the lead out to 13-5 as Hastings struggled with positional play and were frustrated by break down infringements. With 15 minutes to play Feilding got into an attacking position and scored out wide with wing Simi Ului crossing over for a converted try. Hastings still had time and launched a strong attack down the left flank for centre Heta Tulips to score which was converted by Koby Deacon.

Feilding ran out the clock and recorded a satisfying 20-12 win against a heavyweight of NZ High School Rugby.

I haven't seen a team line-up, so no idea which players were playing - other than those mentioned in the match report - and whether this was a genuine 1st XV team. I just hope this is not a sign for how the season is going to turn out! But last year they also started with one or more losses in preseason, I think, so probably nothing to worry (yet).

Haven't seen results from the Napier Boys' and Lindisfarne games, yet.

    More results:

    Hastings Boys 2nd XV beat FAHS 34 - 5.

Lindisfarne College lost 8 - 36 to Gisborne Boys.
This is most of the match report from their FB page:

On Saturday 2nd of April Lindisfarne traveled up to Gisborne for our first annual fixture as the first preseason game of the year. Due to Covid-19 the Palmerston North boys fixture was canceled the week before which meant the Gisborne fixture was taken as a trial game where the game was played in thirds instead of halves.

The match started off strong with Lindisfarne putting up 3 points on the board from a penalty kick. Gisborne shortly after scored 2 converted tries and a penalty kick leaving the score for the first third at 17-3. With strong defence and clearance plays, Lindisfarne were able to hold Gisborne boys off the line for the majority of the 2nd third but let in another two tries due to mistakes on defence giving the 2nd third score 29-3.

The last third of a game was a longer period of 30mins instead of 20mins for the first two thirds. This was also lindisfarnes strongest part of the game with the boys really digging in and never giving up leading to Kingshouse Tupuola scoring a try with a team effort off a line out and contributing to the end game score of 36-8 to Gisborne boys.

Although the game didnt go in our favour the boys showed great determination and held a strong team culture throughout the match.

A big thank you to the Gisborne 1st XV for hosting the game and to the coaches and staff who made this fixture possible, as always we were spoiled with nice food that was really appreciated from us all.

Head coaches Mr Simutoga and Strahan McIntosh, strength and conditioning coach Mrs Akeripa, manager Mr Payne and to the team physio Justin Mills.

Napier Boys v King's College will be streamed: https://sideline.live/play/17015

One game is $4.95. A monthly sub is $9.95. I usually find the monthly sub worthwhile, but it depends - of course - on how many games you're going to watch. They will stream all Maddison Trophy games from next week, too.

Prop Tuli Faleiva is a big boy. Good chance he's a younger brother of Magpies apprentice prop Lolani Faleiva.

Is there a new health and safety rule that there is a break after about 15 minutes? Maybe Covid related?

It's a pity the Napier hooker thought he was a midfielder, going for a run to the try line and passing way too late to his wing, when the King's players had already caught up with him. If he'd passed sooner, it would have been a certain try to the left winger.

That was a great team try from King's College, totally against the run of play, with Napier looking the better team thus far. The score now suggests otherwise.

    Napier Boys 10 - 15 King's College

    Half time. Score hasn't changed.

I'm seeing some good skills from players of both teams. Obviously, also some avoidable mistakes, but not bad at all.
