Still, TOOL at the o2 next Tuesday. Mustn’t grumble

funny, my favourite band, creators of my two favourite albums of all time, i've seen them twice, and in all honesty i have no desire to see them again. I find them to be extremely competent musicians with no stage presence. I just don't enjoy the show.

Wrong. We were both so wrong.

I’ve never seen anything like this. In 30 years of concerts.

Will write more tomorrow but fuck we were wrong.

    oh shit true?

cool. okay i may make the effort if they venture this far

Yeah, the show was epic. I did as I said I was going to and perched myself around 3/4 back with a cracking view with a pint. I caught the last song of Brass Against, the band that became famous for the singers epic stage piss, who were distinctly average.

Tool's setup is all around Carey. He's centre stage with constant lighting, Maynard up on platforms on either side, barely lit with Jones & Chancellor up front doing their thing. Started off with Fear Innoculum which was a bit of a scene setter. Quite sort of entrancing with clever lighting / mooding and I relaxed into it. After that they ripped into Sober followed by Undertow which which are both awesome live. At this point it was really solid. Typical Tool, tight as anything with some cool effects. They they did Pushit where they upped the lighting a bit. At this point I was really enjoying it.

Then Pnuema. Oh my fucking god, Pneuma. The best song I've ever seen live, no question. Exceptionally powerful drumming, the light show just exploded into life with loads of colour (especially red) with some amazing laser lighting effects. It was phenomenal. The heavy third quarter of the song was absolute thunderous with the guitar set at full heavy distortion, the bass rumbling and the incredible drumming reverberating everywhere. Absolutely fucking phenomenal.

At the end of the dude to my right leaned over and said how could you ever top that? And he was right. You won't. They followed up with Grudge which is personal favourite but by now the light show was at full noise and it was what we paid to see. Next two songs I wasn't super familiar with but then they played Hooker With A Penis which was unexpected. Maynard showed his age a bit here as his vocals just can't deliver with the same grunt anymore. Still a great version though.

10 minute break then a 3 songs from Fear Innoc. The first was basically a Carey drum solo which as you can imagine was brilliant. Then a bit of faff followed by the conclusion of Invincible. Which was an incredible way to end. Probably the number two song of the evening there and a worthy closer.

So in summary, the Tool show is fucking unbelievable & totally worth seeing if you can. Yeah, they are artists and their show is very arty with you seeing what they want you to, not what you necessarily want. But if you just sit back and enjoy it you can't help but be completely blown away. Carey is probably the best drummer I've ever seen, and the light show was it's equal. You could argue that they played too much off the new album and not enough old stuff, but that's picking holes really as it's more of a show than a gig so to speak.

I have to finish on Pneuma again though. That will live long in the memory. Just amazing.

Yeah, we were talking about that pre the show. Although that video is excellent at showing Carey's ability, it captures absolutely nothing of the essence of the live performance.

Which is exactly the reason why I suspect Tool ban cameras / recording of their concerts and have active security walking around warning people and potentially evicting (I didn't see any of that tho)

Nile Rodgers met bassist Bernard Edwards in 1970 while working as a touring musician for the Sesame Street stage show.

From the Al Kooper debut (the only version of BST that truly matters imo) this is one of the best psyche blues songs of the ‘67/‘68 period, still sounds epic.

Just listening to the setlist again just now. Currently on 7empest I remember at the time thinking a Danny Carey video for this would be epic. The drumming from about 4 mins to 5:10 is incredible.

Didn't know the song name at the time & that it was 15 mins long tho!

I’m not the absolute biggest Tool fan but Carey is a fucken wicked drummer. He just nails some really weird time signatures so easily.

I appreciate him in the same way as I appreciate Jeff Beck as a Guitarist. I don’t go out of my way to listen but I applaud the freakish talent.

    before i start, shush @Tim

Thanks to @MajorRage and his Tool concert post, i have been back listening to these motherfuckers hard out. Fuck this band absolutely rules. It's certainly not a unique or interesting thing to say as a white guy in his mid-40s, but Tool are my favourite band of all time

Aenima is a fucking masterpiece, packed with amazing tracks. And it occured to me listening yesterday, this track is the blueprint of their later work. Long, intricate, melodic. The drumming all through, but especially at the back end, is fucking insane. Carey is the master.

Very jazzy arrangement of Bach's 'Suite in E Minor for Lute' that rocks along too if you give it time to get going From Jethgro Tull 1969
