The Chiefs and Blues did play today. I don't know the exact score but the Chiefs won and scored 50 odd.

The Barbarians squad looks stronger this year, and includes some players from last year's U20 teams.

@Canes4life Hard to believe that an absolute gun of a power winger like Bethel Malasia isn't in the squad. Our other winger, Josiah Sakaria not named either. Only 4 of the original 7 left. Ezra Malo was initially listed under Whanganui, but has joined the Hawke's Bay Academy.

Anyway, with Larsen still in charge, my expectations aren't very high.

@Bovidae I wish they'd also listed the schools these players played 1st XV at.

Canterbury's Olly Ryan is Crusaders forwards coach Jason Ryan's son.

I will be interested to see the official Chiefs media release because there are a couple of notable omissions, one I thought was a good chance of being the captain. Maybe they are injured.

There are also a few who only left school last year.

@Stargazer Yep. I do note that Dawson Smith has ended up in Canterbury. He went to St Peter's Cambridge but from Rotorua I think.

The Highlanders don't look very interested in helping Southland rugby!

I can probably pick a pretty strong side from the players selected but I’m having trouble picking wingers and props. Isi Saumaki would be one of them I would say, who are the others?

I’ve got this team as our top side so far but there are a few gaps to fill.

    1. Bradley Chrichton (Wellington)
    2. Raymond Tuputupu (Manawatu)
    3. ?
    4. Matt Monaghan (Hawkes Bay)
    5. ?
    6. Peter Lakai (Wellington)
    7. Cooper Flanders (Hawkes Bay)
    8. Dominic Ropeti (Wellington)
    9. Logan Henry (Manawatu)
    10. Harry Godfrey (Hawkes Bay)
    11. Isi Saumaki (Wellington)
    12. Riley Higgins (Wellington)
    13. Kyle Brown (Manawatu)
    14. ?
    15. Chicago Doyle (Wellington)

I wonder if Logan Henry is someone other than the halfback who has played for Manawatu? He was listed as an outside back in the allblacks.com squad list and there was an article about the halfback saying he is a drainlayer and was 25 at the time of the article.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/127987714/drainlayer-logan-henry-hoping-to-extend-hurricanes-stay-after-dream-debut

Also, I think the Barbarians were U20 last year, and this year they're U21 - perhaps not enough talent coming through? Either that or concerns about how competitive they were last year?

    The Chiefs in graphic form.

I don't recognise the names of three of the Waikato players. Google tells me all are from Auckland schools.

@bobily2 I'm pretty sure it's the same Logan Henry but I could be wrong. I think he may have been given an exemption to play in this tournament.

He was squad reserve halfback for the main squad last week when they were in Sydney.

@Canes4life Siale Lauaki at TH prop if they think he is ready (was named in the NZ Schools squad last year).

@Bovidae he reminds me of Alex Fidow, awesome ball carrier but not the best scrummager. I just don't know enough about the rest of the squad to make certain that he's the best man to fill that 3 jersey.

Eli Fraser started against the Crusaders the other day at lock but he hasn't been selected so I wonder if he picked up an injury.

@bobily2 is right. You've got the wrong Logan Henry. I expect the first-choice halfback to be Jordi Viljoen.
