Yep, Nicholls was a right calf injury plus a recent bout of Covid while rehabbing.

Wagner was just a selection call. Reading between the lines it might have been a choice between him and Ajaz, based on: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/sport/468185/boult-and-nicholls-in-doubt-for-first-test

Wags only bowled in one innings in the warmup games - 0/59 off 19 when we got done by the First Class Counties XI by seven wickets, so he may have been a bit underdone. Both teams also seemed to misread the Lords pitch as being better for batting than it was, which may have been why we've played Ajaz for a fourth/fifth day...

@Gunner Mitch Jr has been decidedly unlucky with his timing. For much of our history he'd already have done enough to secure a job for life!!!

He still has opportunity to supplant Nicholls, who to me is one of a few flat track bullies in our side

Is he though ? Test averages over 40 are like hens teeth in annals of New Zealand cricket history.

He also has a habit of busting out a huge innings when people are calling for his head too.

I don't think of consistency when I think of him. Just using the eye test, I haven't looked at his record vs each country or anything

I do kinda see what you’re getting at and perhaps he suffers in comparison to KW, Conway and Taylor but stop and think of some of the walking wickets we’ve had previously….not to mention his record as it stands is still above handy players of recentish vintage like Astle, McMillan and Styris.

It does need to be pointed out how well Mitchell has done though. Shit we needed a score from him today !

8 test centuries puts him in the top 10 of NZ players who have hundreds.

    105 v South Africa
    118 v South Africa
    157 v Pakistan
    126 no v Pakistan
    107 v Bangladesh
    145 no v England
    162 no v Sri Lanka
    174 v West Indies

    plus 11 -50's. add that to 1 ODI 100 plus 12 50's

doesn't look to shabby to me.

Pretty good. Mitchell generally looks so composed. It would be nice to find a spot for him. Colin seems to have found a new lease on life too. He looked untroubled in his first innings

On paper that might be a good decision but geez the thought of dropping Wags offends me

Yep Daryl is a fighter good to have depth, looking at the 2nd test if your were going to bring Nicholls back.Conway to open for Young on form I would guess.I wouldn't drop Colin he looks good I agree, love watching him bat when he is in form.

I would be happy with that. Young out, Mitch Jr stays based on performance

That's Henry "Job for Life" Nicholls you're talking about! 🙂

Something interesting about our team at the moment is how close in age they all are. CdG is a bit older and Big Kyle a big younger (in this week's team) but, we've got a whole raft of players in their early 30s. Mainstays of some of the other forms like Ferguson and Neesh are in the same age group.

No real youngsters in the frontline, which is slightly concerning..

CdG has an almost effortless technique and one of those players that looks like he has plenty of time. Doesn’t have all those idiosyncrasies that many of the modern batsmen have these days.

@canefan He is - and there's probably another couple of youngsters on tour, if I looked - but, not yet frontline players.

Wags is on tour at the other end of the spectrum - and still frontline.

Santner another in the tight early-30s grouping.

Edit: Actually, seems like Ravindra's not. Look at all those guys 29-33...

Yeah. I guess they are all in their prime. And we are the world champs 😎. It's a bit like the great aussie teams. A guy like David Hussey was in his 30s before he broke into the side, such was the high standard
