giving up 300 in 50 overs in a test is actually retarded. Bad bowling, but worse captaincy. There are no fielding restrictions for fucks sake!!! just dumb, unheard of bad cricket.

it's gone very wrong very quickly

Maybe I got too used to BMac shifting fielders every two seconds into weird and wonderful positions, but Latham can be the exact opposite.

Cool calm heads at the right time are often what's needed... but when you're getting your arse kicked at home by Bangladesh, at least appear slightly aware of the magnitude of what's happening. Perhaps show a little bit more intent [or desperation], stop painting by numbers, and start trying any fielding or bowling change to turn things around...

@MN5 I was worried about Baz, especially in combination with Stokes.

I understand all the logical, rational reasons why it's perfectly fine for our relatively recent Black Caps captain to coach England to victory against us in the professional era.

But right now I'm still seething and Baz can get in the bin, preferably after handing back his passport! 🙂

Just goes to show what an inspirational cricketer he was. Decent enough player but obviously his man management and pep talks are nothing short of terrific.

Obviously losing Jamieson was massive. Bairstow has been his bunny previously, and the variable bounce on the day 5 pitch would've been hard to deal with given he's releasing it from a 3rd story window.

Yeah, losing a frontline seamer in a test is the worst possible thing that can happen. However that should have been the difference between a win and a draw given the target we set and time remaining. Actually losing the match is just incredibly poor given there are no fielding restrictions and very few restrictions on bowlers line/length. I don't think Latham is a great captain, and Stead really doesn't seem to add much as a coach. We would be better off with McCullum TBH!

    So...

    • Michael Bracewell is in isolation for five days ahead of the third Test after a positive RAT test this morning
    • Kyle Jamieson out till September/October "after an MRI scan revealed a stress-reaction to his lower left back."
    • Cam Fletcher "has also been ruled out of the tour with a grade-two right-hamstring strain."
    • Blair Tickner and Dane Cleaver called into the squad.

Ach. It’s you guys that are shitting the bed. You set us a target above anything done before at Trent Bridge, after a great first innings and a pretty good second innings. Had our two in form batsmen out cheaply but then lost to an out of the blue innings from Bairstow. For sure there were some pies bowled but equally some decent stuff that he just slaughtered. Plus a bit of good luck. Sometimes it’s just not your day and that was today for your guys, well half of today. That doesn’t make you lot a shit team and it doesn’t suddenly make us that good. If Bairstow gets one of his “meh” days, you win the test.

Agree with the second part, but disagree with the first. We are shit and so are you (albeit less so than us). Shit teams do very badly away from home (regardless of opposition) and do quite well at home against other shit teams. We would both lose to Australia and India - home or away - very convincingly.

You may well be right, but what I was trying to say was that performance in itself doesn’t make you a shit team. There were a lot of positives to take from that game until Bairstow took it away from in you in a few overs.

Initial thoughts on a third test team:

    1. Latham
    2. Young
    3. Williamson
    4. Conway
    5. Nicholls
    6. Mitchell
    7. Blundell
    8. Henry
    9. Wagner
    10. Patel
    11. Boult

With a bowling plan to just bowl Wags at one end all day, and for the Captain to actually use Mitchell as a fifth bowler if needed. Not sure if Bracewell will be well in time, but for now his spin looks more like a fifth bowling option. Wonder if we get Ravindra back into the squad...

Plan B is Bracewell or Ravindra at 7, Mitchell and Blundell move up one, and Nicholls carries the drinks.

What are the odds that Stead manages to come up with something like:

    1. Latham
    2. Young
    3. Williamson
    4. Conway
    5. Mitchell
    6. Blundell
    7. Bracewell
    8. Henry
    9. Southee
    10. Patel
    11. Boult

    ..........

Since when did Henry suddenly jump Wags in the pecking order? FFS it is time to get rid of Stead, he has lost the plot

Squads for the Scotland, Ireland, and Netherlands white ball games announced: https://www.nzc.nz/news-items/rippon-earns-first-blackcaps-call-up-as-white-ball-squads-named-for-ireland-scotland-and-netherlands

I know it's based on time away, but it still feels slightly curious to see Williamson rested, given he's batted for about an hour at most for the Black Caps since last November.
