I can't fault anybody from number 6 down. They've all played their guts out.

Bracewell might have played his guts out - but he should be nowhere near the side.

A poor man's Mitch Santner. Stead really has lost the plot. Send him off to exile Island on the same boat as Jason Holland....

It seems to be high performance in NZ Cricket these days you have to ignore your best players as much as possible. Wagner, Ajaz, Kasperek, and Satterthwaite being among the most obvious cases of "top level coaches" inexplicably leaving out decent players in the last twelve months.

(Though whether Kane would have given Patel a decent stint at the bowling crease is another story...)

In hindsight, if we really wanted a batting spinner, it turns out we could have done worse than Mitchell Santner. Who at least bowling in white-ball mode might not have conceded eleventy-hundred an over...

    Ouch.

    But yeah possibly accurate.

Which Bracewell isn’t judging by his RPO

We seem to be stuck in a mindset that spinners are only in the team to spell the seamers

If the player of the series is to come from England, I’d give it to Bairstow. The pace at which he has scored has been a massive factor

Took just over an hour to score 113 runs evidently.

Well done England. We were (sort of) in this series, but then taken away from each match, by superior 4th innings batting helped by some poor bowling and selections by us.

300+ 4th inning run chases are no longer safe!

When your top order fails to fire, and you compound this with poor selection and tactics, we had no chance. Captaincy from Kane and Tom seemed to lack inspiration

That Bracewell turned out to be cannon fodder shouldn't also mask the overall poor performance of the pace attack during the series. Runs were flowing off them like a 2000's ODI as well, and Southee seemed a bit cooked after the first test.

None of which was helped by some pretty listless captaincy in the field.

or injuries too too be fair. but we couldn't ever control their run rate, and with a top order falling, that's that.

    Well that sucked!!!

I have avoided this thread and pretty much all commentary on the series.

The Rose Bowl seems like a generation ago...

Mitchell and Blundell are two huge positives to come out of this.

The top 5 have been comically bad. Currently without a doubt the worst top 5 going. By a long way. Not even close.

Lots of reasons but have NZC not learned that trying to tour without adequate preparation ends in failure? Talk about doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.
IPL fucks things up but it’s NZCs job to get past that.

I suspect we find out over the next six months whether Kane is still a going concern, or whether that feared Martin Crowe like ending to his international career looms. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think the signs are great.

To be unusually fair to them, two warm-up first class games is probably more prep than most tours these days. The top order still shat the bed with the bat in one of those games as well...

@Crucial That argument would be more valid if we hadn't been in a position to win all three tests but failed to grasp the moment

1st Test England four down early chasing nearly 300
2nd test 550 in first innings after being put in
3rd Test England 6 down in first innings still nearly 300 behind!!

That's not a lack of preparation.

If not for Mitch, Blundell and Boult we'd be Zimbabwe bad.
