DISCLAIMER: Not an Elvis fan. Don't really have much time for him, but acknowledge his influence on popular culture and wider society. But it was Sunday night and we'd done nothing all day, so decided to ditch the kids and go do dinner-and-a-movie.
I had no expectations, so when the opening credits started, I thought "ah fuck here's another Luhrmann song-and-dance bullshit musical" (you'll know what I mean if you see it).
However, this settled down into a very solid and entertaining film, with a minimal dose of the whimsy Luhrmann usually brings. The subject matter is treated with a fair degree of gravity, and the lead actor was impressive. Very impressive actually. I'm told he lived and breathed Elvis for some time before production even started, and recorded some of the tracks himself.
With that performance, fluffybunny is set for life.
Hanks is Hanks. So good to watch him play the manipulative manager and narrator. There are a host of Aussies filling minor roles including David Wenham, Richard Roxburgh, Kodi-Smit McPhee, and others. Made in Queensland apparently - would have been easier to depict the 1950s I suppose

Just watched Maverickā¦.hands down the best film Iāve seen in years, Iām sure there are faults but I was enjoying it too much to notice or remember them
Disappointed they wrapped things up so well as very unlikely to be another

I think that was the first ever black-comedy I ever watched in my life. Must have been aged 18 ro 20. I dont think i even knew that was a genre back then.
I think a flatmate got it out on video, so i knew nothing about what i was about to watch.was quite a surprise.

Scene of the year. Gage white-knights for Aisha and explains white privilege to the boys.
I downloaded and watched it last night, inspirational and genuinely hilarious satire, they time-travel to the future (today) and theyāre not holding back.

Always worth a re watch every few yearsā¦ā¦Denzil and Ethan are just outstanding and thereās a great support cast too.
Thereās some things I find weird and canāt get my head around thoughā¦ā¦
Who was Roger, an ex cop or a drug dealer ? Or both ? Why did they visit him beforehand ?
How did they know that hustling Snoops character would lead them to a drug dealer with a lazy 40 grand in his room to bribe the three corrupt cops?
What happened after the Latino guys ( and Cliff Curtis ) let Hoyt go ? Was it āsorry for trying to execute you, youāre free to goāā¦ā¦I find it hard to believe there were no repercussions there.
Bloody good flick though.

Elvis movie was significantly better than I expected it to be. Didnāt think the guy looked enough like him, but his voice and mannerisms were uncanny. Probably the best representation of him yet.
Structure of the movie puts the music front and centre and doesnāt shy away from how naive Presley was and how evil The Colonel was. End was pretty emotional.
Excellent movie. 5 Elvis the Pelvis out of 5.

@Kirwan I agree, (Iām not as high on the rating though) although I thought he looked enough like him to accurately portray him yet not too much like an impersonator.
Itās a very Baz film so I guess peoples enjoyment will depend on how they like his style.
I listen to Hanks on a podcast and he noted it was rewritten when he had Covid after discussions with Priscilla and other people who knew the colonel. Apparently the version we see is much softer on him than the original script.
The end was pretty dust in the eye despite the fact we all know how it ends.
