Just saw the results of today's rep games on Twitter:
Hawke's Bay U19 38 - 17 Taranaki U19
Hawke's Bay Development 27 - 45 Whanganui
Horowhenua Kapiti 40 - 17 Central Hawkes BayIn the Farah Palmer Cup, the Tui had a big win against Northland in Whangārei: 32 - 17!

At least the Wanganui press knew the game was on and even sent their own reporter over to compile a report. Interestingly both newspapers (HB & Wanganui) are owned by the same organisation, but far different sports news priorities in each by the looks of things.

@Higgins Ha, I had read exactly the same text on the Whanganui Rugby website. They must have the same close relationship with the Whanganui Chronicle that the HBRU used to have with the HBT (until the HBT significantly reduced their rugby coverage; unfortunately, nothing to find on the Hawke's Bay Rugby app anymore either).

I have no doubt there will be an U19 (preseason) game, this weekend, as the official tournament for the Central Region Shield starts on 27 August. I haven't been able to find out yet, who and where they're playing. Most likely a team from outside the region. They have already played Waikato and Taranaki. Maybe BOP?

@Stargazer Given the paucity of information we got last weekend you would be better advised scrutinising the websites/social media thingys of possible opponents than wasting time with their HB counterparts.

@Nepia Hahaha. They should just do what others do: publish squad lists and their playing schedule on their website. Look at Waikato's U19 page. Easy peasy. Then one post on their FB page with the match day 23 (& k/o time + venue) before the match and one post after with the result. Done!

Can anyone give a little info on Ross Shield please.
Teams? From what I remember South CHB, West etc who else
Weight restrictions?
Age, Y7 & 8 and are Y6 players eligible?
Do they have a tournament team that goes to Roller Mills?

The Ross Shield tournament is usually held in the first week of October.
The participating teams are Central HB, Hastings West, Wairoa, Dannevirke, Napier and Hastings East.
Players may not have passed Year 8 (so no high school students), is age-restricted to players under 14 years old and weight-restricted to kids under 57kg. Teams can be mixed boys and girls (although the number of girls is still limited).
At the end of the tournament week, a tournament team will be named that will play one or two games, but never heard they go on to Roller Mills. There are several trophies to be played for, too.There is also another weight restricted tournament - the Wakely Shield Tournament - that is played the following week.
Teams: Hastings East, Saracens, Napier East, Wairoa, Napier West, Central HB, Hastings West and Barbarians.

@Stargazer 57kg, wish it was that weight in my day (I think it was 50 or 52kg) then I wouldn't have had to starve myself on the bus.

@Nepia Think it might have been eight stone weight limit when I played in the early 70s. Need I gloat but my team won every game to nil en route to winning the Shield!

That's roughly 50kg? So it didn't change much in a decade and a bit.
Sadly we didn't win, we came second to the evil empire of Napier. Was the final tournament that Taupo played in (and it was in Taupo).

I never made it as was to heavy, my brother played in one year.
My son has made Ross Brown, Taranaki's equivalent and it's picked on School Zones, not Clubs. South, Central, West and North. The weight limit up to 3 years ago was 57.5kgs as that was required to go to Roller Mills. Now they no longer enter RM's as too expensive they pushed weight to 60kgs.

Dannevirke W 28-0@Number-10 That's it thanks. From memory it was rather wet and cold until the last day when we ran riot over Dannevirke. Think one of the tries against Nepia's outfit came rather late in the game and against the run of play but still 4 - 0 was a comfortable margin until that burst doubled the Napier score.
Must hunt around to see if my Ross Shield Cap is in the safe place I stored it many years ago but forget where that safe place was! -

Hawkes Bay Maori 26 27 Hawkes Bay Samoa 5 tries to 4 but Samoa could only convert 1
Even allowing for my poor scoreboard attempt last night I'm pretty sure that was right but I got there after the first ten minutes so had to rely on others but general consensus was seventeen nil to Samoa at half time.
Not much of a game to watch but Samoa certainly attacked very effectively almost bulldozer style with the Maori spinning it wider a bit more often but as it was a sort of warm up friendly the winners used what appeared to be a rolling sub rule waaaaaaay more often than the Maori side did. Some of the tackling was very hard but mostly legal with a number of splendid around the knees tackles bringing the larger players to the ground. Overall the winner was the better on the day and in reality should have won by a bit more than they did, a couple of late Maori tries closed it up a bit.
A decent crowd of about five hundred or thereabouts watched in chilly but sunny and fine weather at Farndon Park which was in good order and not the slightest bit slippery or muddy.
