Movie review thread...
Jury, i hadn't heard of Appaloosa, but it got a great review in Empire, and Mortenson generally doesn't appear in dross, so it may be on the cards for this weekend.
<br />
<br />
I read a couple months ago that Mortenson has quietly retired from film-acting, like, permanently. He seems like one of the very few Hollywood actors who you could believe might actually be seriously telling the truth; then again he's also a leg-puller. -
Public Enemy--the story of Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger. Johnny Depp plays Dillinger. Directed by Michael Mann, of Miami Vice fame. Very enjoyable and a look at what a real economic meltdown actually looked like. Worth going to see if you have the opportunity.<br />
<br />
8.5/10
<br />
<br />
FYI, update to my earlier review of the film and other Dillinger biopics --<br />

<br />
-- via Roger Ebert, just read this fascinating oddball commentary by Jay Robert Nash, who "holds the theory that John Dillinger was not killed by the FBI in front of the Biograph Theater on July 24, 1934. Nash informs [Ebert] he stands behind his two books on the subject, and may have met the real Dillinger many years later."<br />

<br />
Film wrong! Dillinger not killed by FBI! Fact: Hoover coverup!
<br />

Interesting read there, Red. I remember reading about the discrepancies in the case of Dillinger and it IS entirely plausible that they shot the wrong guy. I'm not a conspiracy theorists but it would have been pretty hard to change the eye colour eh?

RT, yea i saw the trailer for that, it looks seriously fucking cool.<br />
<br />
Jury, i hadn't heard of Appaloosa, but it got a great review in Empire, and Mortenson generally doesn't appear in dross, so it may be on the cards for this weekend.
<br />
<br />
It's a little bit of a sedate pace and I think the cast was great. Even old Lance Hendrikson (sp) appears in it! There's just enough mean man stuff and character development to keep you interested. Not as fast paced as the 3.10 to Yuma (which I really liked and went out and bought), but I enjoyed it. Might go buy it so I can watch it again sometime.
<br />
<br />
I second all that you've said about Appaloosa Jury, I rate it one of the best westerns I've seen. Great cast, good acting and as you say, even Renee 'eating vinegar of a fork' Zelwegger shines in it.<br />
<br />
One I would watch again. -

Jeez, I thought 3:10 to Yuma was slow - although I thought it was pretty good.<br />
<br />
anyone mentioned the hangover...??
<br />
<br />
I thought the Hangover was funny, but it didn't quite live up to the hype. However I Love You, Man was hilarious - they probably lost viewers because of the title though, I thought it was a chick flick before watching it. I was cracking up constantly - Paul Rudd is a bloody funny guy. -

<br />
Still laughing. My brother is Fat Jesus.
<br />
<br />
Watched this tonight having heard great things about it. Guess its a case of expectations being built up. I smiled a few times but I found it pretty formulaic and predictable. I must be old. Was a good idea though and they had a seriously cool weekend. -
Apple just released an exclusive new trailer for "Lovely Bones" with intro by P. Jackson.<br />

Cool to see Brian Eno scoring the soundtrack.<br />

<br />
Looks like he's using digitally manipulated Milford Sound (again) for one of the "heaven" sequences. -

<br />
I did not even KNOW the movie existed - meet up with friends for dinner and then they'd picked the movie so we just rocked up, watched, and laughed! So zero expectations, and in good mood as we have been laughing and having a good time pre movie too. -

<br />
That's always the way to go onto a movie I reckon - if Hangover hadn't been hyped I would have enjoyed it more. I still think it's a good film but not as good as the hype. -
Twilight.<br />
Utter shit, but then I'm not a teenage girl. <br />
<br />
But if I was to compare it to my memories of The Lost Boys - it wouldn't come close, no siree.<br />
<br />
Plus there was way too much pale skin going on that I found off putting.
<br />
<br />
I decided to give it a go. It reminded me of an early 90's music video for aerosmith or some other rock ballad outfit. Fucking awful. Can't say there was one enjoyable moment.<br />
Can anyone one tell me why they "had' to play baseball in a storm? why not in the dark or at dusk? Fucking stupid movie -

I assumed my rating (utter shit) would be a warning to others not to repeat my mistake.<br />
<br />
I think they needed to play baseball in the storm for the noise of the ball hitting the bat - that's what I assumed. I can ask my Twilight obsessed cousin what the books says if it's really troubling you. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> -
Had my eye on this film for a while, be interesting to see how it turns out. Good trailer;<br />

Saw the trailers for that when I was last at the movies (dragged along to the latest Potter....I just don't get it?), was amazed to see, but looks like it could be quite cool! Vividly remember that book, will be strange to see a movie. -
Anybody seen Coraline on dvd yet? I saw it on the big screen, and thought the kaleidescopic 3D was like an LSD trip (the good kind), and curious whether the dvd is also 3D and how well the effect works at home. The cinemas have special digital projectors... how do they do 3D for home viewing? Do you need to view earing the same "REAL-D" eye-glasses you get at the theatre? If the transfer process works, I'd imagine it'd look spectacular on a HD wide-screen.

watched 'I love you man' 7.5/10<br />
<br />
Quite amusing, bit of a 'bromantic' comedy, easy to watch, gotta feel for Lou Ferrigno though, if he had been offered the role as Conan.... -
Anybody doing Distict 9 opening night? I am. Late show. Might have to start a separate thread. I wonder if Saffers will love it or really, really hate it. The production credit says it is a "New Zealand" film. $30-million productionbudget. (Marketing budget must be about the same? Heavy promotion on TV and poster in Toronto/Ontario for the past three months. The young Saffer director Blomkamp is 29; apparently moved to Vancouver when he was 18; that puts him in Jo'burg in 1998, would have been 15 when Boks won RWC). Jackson will make another bucketload in global box-office and dvd. Something tells me I'll probably go see it twice. Can't wait.

Got free tickets to GI Joe the other night. <br />
<br />
Unitentionally hilarious. Loved the mountains at the North Pole and the sinking icebergs. The final reveal is pretty easy to pick. <br />
<br />
That said, the chicks in it are hot and it could be worse. -

Not at all. I suppose had I been paying any type of attention to the movie I would have figured that out myself. -

Have heard nothing but good things about this movie. I heard that it was as good a mockumentary as Best in show. Obviously not a comedic movie but it has given a brand new twist to the genre. Im very excited about this one. -

Obviously looking forward to this movie as most kiwis would be but this does remind of vincent wards "what dreams may come" visually.
