@JK yep, seen comments on SM through the year talking down the NH comp and how far behind the Auckland one they were, so great to see them get up, had a very good year.

I cant recall off the top of my head, but they are unbeaten this year so far?

In the NH comp yes, not in other games. Of their preseason games, traditionals or exchanges, Westlake Boys lost to Kelston Boys (0 - 5), Hamilton Boys (5-29), Dilworth School (don't know the score), to Tauranga Boys (22-26) and they beat New Plymouth Boys (10 - 6). Their game against Hastings Boys was cancelled.

@JK The Top 4 has been held in PN for a while now. Much easier for me when it was in Rotorua.

The semis are live on Sky Sport 1

1:00 pm - Westlake BHS vs Napier BHS
2:35 pm - Hamilton BHS vs John McGlashan College

I hope the weather is good on Friday.

@Kiwiwomble Their coach is Russell Lundy.

Here's an article from before the Final:

    Charter plane for high-flying team

It has probably been a little more sophisticated than a whip-around with a spare first XV cap. The John McGlashan College rugby team has been...

Most of us will be calling it the McGlashan Miracle. But don’t tell Russell Lundy there was anything shocking about his First XV winning the South...

    Result:

Blues Girls' Final (Blues Girls' Top 4 qualifier)
Auckland Girls' Grammar 27 - 15 Westlake GHS

I watched some of that game and Westlake Girls' were leading 15 - 0 at half time. The second half was messy with AGGS collecting two yellow cards and a red, and Westlake one yellow. Couldn't see what for except that one yellow was for a high tackle.

    Complete Top 4 semi-finals schedule:

    Friday 9 September 2022

    Boys' 1st XV Championship Semi-finals
1:00pm: Westlake Boys High vs Napier Boys High
2:35pm: Hamilton Boys High vs John McGlashan College

    Girls’ 1st XV Championship – Semi-finals
10.30am: Auckland Girls Grammar vs Manukura
12.30pm: Manurewa High vs Christchurch Girls High

@Kiwiwomble my guess, money. Also academically it is a very good school. So, if you have money you send your kids to the best school available.

Possibly a bit of luck as well. I'd say these kids have known each other for a long time both socially and in sports. Stands to reason that they, and their families, would look at the same school.

@Crucial The parents also need to come up with the tuition fees and or boarding fees. So another 10-16k depending on whether they are day boys or boarding.

I think all three families live in the area don't they? Probably did a bulk deal with some payment in kind.
Lots of schools would jump at the chance of a group of players that come with input and contacts from top coaches. These guys/families just all picked this one.
I don't see any difference to any established rugby school. I live near Silverstream and there are heaps of kids getting off the train every day that are certainly not of a demographic that can pay fees. The fee paying parents subsidise in order to bask in reflected glory as has always been the case.
