Hurricanes 2023

Good squad was very suprised they stuck with Tosi though I’m happy they did also shocked Gibson got dropped they seemed to be dribbling all over him when he signed so happy PUJ is staying.

I'm really intrigued to see the Highlanders squad now, to see whether guys like Gibson, O'Reilly and Garden-Bachop end up there.
-
Overall I'm stoked with this squad.
I'd have the Crusaders as favourites but I feel the Blues/Canes/Chiefs all look pretty even and can all challenge for the title.

A lot of loose forwards, even after moving Delany to lock.
I think 8 is the usual amount isn’t it?
The Hurricanes have selected a 22:16 forwards:backs split while the Blues and Chiefs have gone for 21:17. The balance will differ depending on how versatile the players are within each squad.

Hooker and loosie are both full. I wouldn't be surprised if Garden-Bachop turns up down there at injury cover for Hunt.

@Canes4life Yeah will be in mean while not great I think JGB at least adds experience especially to nature the young 10s at the Landers I think I read Apasai had that 3rd hookers position down there.
As for Gibson he’s really fallen down the ranks. -
@mikey07 I'm a bit disappointed at no Gibson. I thought he was very good for the Canes. Had a hell of a game against the Landers early in the season.

I think Gibson probably lost his spot out of no fault of his own. The Hurricanes had to sign Lakai because he was essentially the best player in the NPC this year and Gibson probably lost out because he was the guy coming off contract.

@Canes4life much rather have kept Gibson than Princep.
More cover at 7 with Gibson.
We're not light at blindside or 8.

@Canes4life Interesting a guy like Laubscher who’s unproven gets a contract over Gibson. Though I’m my opinion I think Laubscher looks like a player with alot of potential.

@foobaNZ Princeep is still contracted so can’t chop him but he is off contract, laubscher, Iose and Lakai can cover 7.
-
The other location JGB could end up is Moana Pasifika. He would be eligible for Samoa?

@SouthernMann I hope he does. I think he'd be a good pick up for them.

So Tosi is the 6th prop, Devery is the third hooker, and Gibson has been dropped.
That squad is strong and I think we can definitely win the title. Need to keep key players fit though.

Happy that Tyler has been kept. Gibson is a bit ordinary. And there are three+ 7 options now including Lakai & Savea
Disappointing for Sheck but the other young wellington prop (Siale Lauaki) might replace Franks in 2024
-

There’s also Gus Brown coming through from Napier Boys High School who is someone the Canes will want to keep.
