@Tim Sadly Pat Lam reports that Luatua is injured and won't be able to play for Samoa on their northern tour.

Weird squad. A lot of guys recruited mid year have now been dropped. Are players required to pay for flights north?

Seems likely to be added with Luatua injured. Mapusua seems to have wanted all those former ABs in the team ASAP.

@Machpants loooool what the actual? that has to be satire

If i had a dollar for every green-jersied prop taking a knee before a scrum, or my personal fav, someone needing treatment right at the lineout mark, i would be a considerably richer man.

it's a fucking blight on the game, and there is nothing the ref can do.

@Machpants I did like the link in the article to another one..."Sexton is a petulant child"

"Whiny Biatch" is probably better, but still..

Tonga and Samoa will battle it out for a spot in the World Rugby U20 Trophy tournament, next year.

Tonga to host Samoa in 2022 Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy

Oceania Rugby Interim General Manager Lemalu Wayne Schuster noted the importance of regional age grade competitions in bridging the gap between schoolboy’s rugby and senior international XV.

“The Oceania Rugby U20s Trophy is a crucial international competition pathway for teams within our region who are not qualified for the World Rugby U20 Championship. The Trophy not only provides critical game time, but also serves as a qualification event for the World Rugby U20s Trophy in 2023.

“We are exploring opportunities to expand the Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy to include more of our development and performance Unions which will involve a bit more work and dialogue with these member unions in building their age grade pathways”, Schuster added.

2022 Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy Schedule (Teufaiva Sport Stadium, Nuku’alofa)
    Round 1: Tuesday 29 November 2022 3PM: Tonga v Samoa
    Round 2: Saturday 3 December 2022 3PM: Tonga v Samoa
    All times local

I'm genuinely surprised they're not both already in the World U20s.

There are only 12 teams and both Samoa and Tonga seem to have been stuck in the Trophy for a while. BTW, Scotland was relegated from the Championship in the last edition.

Yep, 12 teams in the WR U20 Championship and only 8 teams in the WR U20 Trophy. I assume only one of those 8 spots goes to Oceania, hence Samoa and Tonga having to compete for that spot in the Oceania U20 Trophy.

    From the article below:

World Rugby U20 Championship 2023 participating unions: Argentina, Australia, England, Fiji, France, Georgia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Wales.

Japan won the last WR U20 Trophy, so earned promotion.

In the World Rugby U20 Trophy 2023, Scotland will be among the favourite for promotion but will have to compete with the likes of Portugal and Uruguay who have impressed in recent editions.

World Rugby U20 Trophy 2023 participating unions: Scotland (relegated from the U20 Championship 2019), Host Country, six teams qualifying through regional competitions

I understand the host country is Spain.

Yes, and the winner then needs to win the Trophy. Wiki shows that Tonga got well beaten 40-3 by Portugal in the 2019 Trophy pool game so didn't even make the final. Japan only beat Portugal 35-34 in the final.

Samoa had qualified for the later cancelled 2020 Trophy.

    Further info:

The 8 teams involved in the U20 Trophy are:

    Host country
    Relegated country (from Championship)
    Asia
    Africa
    North America
    South America
    Europe
    Oceania

A straight final, so you need to win your pool.

SA Rugby announced on Wednesday that three current Springbok assistant coaches Mzwandile Stick, Deon Davids and Daan Human, as well as Head of Athletic Performance, Andy Edwards, had signed contract extensions for another four years, which will see them remain with the team until the conclusion of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

They will continue in their roles under the guidance of SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus, whose services are tied in until the end of the 2025 season at least.

Two members of the coaching team – Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber and assistant coach Felix Jones – have advised that they are taking up offers with England and Leinster respectively after the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
