@Nepia makes sense, would have thought a film that could get that many big stars to sign off wouldn't have funding issues, also a proven source material

I'm not sure it's a proven source material to the general public, as opposed to us nerds. I think there was a lot of worry about how well it would do at the time despite having the most hyped director of the time.

I wonder if the stars got them a bit of extra money or helped them get the money?

Agreed. If you’re a Dune fan your viewpoint on the film would be very different to those not so disposed.

I tried reading the book back in the day. Tried watching the shit film with Sting and thought both very tedious. Tried watching the new flick and found the pretentiousness on the same level and allied to that was the necessity to have crap dialogue purely to try and explain the story. Had to bale out pretty early.

    What a pile of wank.

I get what you’re saying to some degree.

It’s certainly thinking mans Sci fi as opposed to Star Wars ( although Andor has swung things more in Dunes direction ).

To this day I still haven’t read the book but I enjoyed the 90’s Computer games and I liked parts of the 80s movie you mentioned. Definitely a weird one but elements were better than the latest entry ( I liked the Baron in the 80s film as one example )

havent seen the 80' movie but read the book during COVID in anticipation of the movie, actually found it contrived but in hindsight i think thats because several aspects have become tropes in more recent SciFi, im sure they were original ideas when it was written

LOVED the 2021 movie though, thought they turned some of the more tedious aspects into this visually spectacular scenes and kept things moving quite nicely

was on tv a few months ago, watched and still loved it

@MN5 said in Movie review thread...:

I think @NTA explained it best so I might need a refresher.

The reason they don’t just shoot each other with laser guns ( like Star Wars ) is cos they ALL have special shields on their bodies is that right ?

yes, people have shields but the shields are designed to stop fast moving things (bullets, lazers), so people have reverted to older technology (bladed weapons) as they can be worked through shields

regression of technology being one of those tropes, no computers or AI being another example of this

interestingly Star wars stole this idea for their old republic stories, people had personal shields so characters carried swords etc

I love the book, tried the later ones but they got boring. I also love the movie, a great adaption. Same as LotR, you gotta change some stuff, some of it key (eg Aragorn's attitude to being King) to make it work

@Machpants the casting was top notch. That makes a big difference and was one of the things that made LOTR so fucking good. I like the way it handles technology and how that has led to hand to hand combat. One big part of that is the Navigators guild owning space so the factions don't really have legit space power. Imo that is where the technology setting would break down fast.

The digital de aging looks incredible.

It can’t be any worse than the Crystal Skull……actually ignore that comment……

I love how grumpy Ford gets when asked about his most iconic roles and yet he’s come back and reprised three of them.

i don't, in my mind it makes him a massive dick

"oh, whaaa, people love movies i'm in, and that makes me grumpy"

you stupid old fuck, if your career was The Fugitive and Witness you would be nowhere near as respected as you are now.

Artists who go out of their way to make a point how cringe they find the very thing that made them famous is always really fucking annoying. fluffybunny you were a fucking carpenter until Han Solo and Indie made you famous.

@MN5 what are the three? Indie, Han....

@mariner4life yeah, i felt he'd been dickish before, there are plenty of stars that dont completely indulge large parts of the fandom...but you can be polite. saw a video recently from the promo tour of TFA and the interviewer asks everyone "who shot first, han or greedo?"...everyone gave an answer (han)...and ford says "i dont care" and kind of looks off screen as if to say get me out of here. this isn't some random interview...its actual press for the movie youve just done

in saying that, Indie is now old enough that can can really be the grumpy old man (i know indie was always a big grumpy) that ford is...so this could work

    edit: @MN5 Bladerunner?

The 4th film was dumb. This one is taking the piss. And I say that as someone who thinks Raiders was close to the perfect film. Absolutely brilliant.

Being modern Hollywood they'll no doubt kill Indy and replace him with a his long lost transgender daughter.

It would be nice if Hollywood reflected real life. 😉

When I say I ‘love’ it it’s probably more a case of it amusing me in a cringy way.

I don’t recall any interviews with him saying how lucky he was to get that big break and become a megastar. Even many other stars I consider dickwads do that so poor form from Ford.

I think Sean Connery was even worse with trying to get away from being “typecast” as Bond. Again, he was a nobody before that put him on the map.

But then he was just so immensely cool and charismatic as Indy/Han I guess people cut him slack. Fair enough.

    Fingers crossed.

What a loathesome fucktard that character was. Perfectly cast.
