    Semi final results:

    Grey College 14 - 11 Cardiff & Vale
    Hamilton BHS 14 - 0 Millfield School

HBHS's handling was really poor in this game. They dropped the ball at least four times on or near the goal line, three times in the 1st half alone. Should have scored 30+ points.

The SA ref (who officiated in one of the NZ U19 tour games) was determined to penalise HBHS off the park. He was particularly harsh on attacking breakdowns and didn't reward the dominant scrum. And then there was the clear try in the 1st half that wasn't given as he said it was held up.

I'd be wanting a better performance in the final. One thing I have noticed is that the starting forward pack is quite different to that which played in the Super 8 and Top 4. A starting prop and lock are on the bench and the 7 and 8 have swapped positions. Spencer finally played and looked really dangerous in the 1st half especially, but still no sign of the 1st 5 Lunjevich.

@Stargazer Tom McCarthy isn't a big hooker but seems very strong for his size and carries the ball well - usually.

@Bovidae some Saffas on social media are saying this was thier 'junior' side or thier 2nd 15 otherwise thier top side would have destroyed all comers.

@taniwharugby Yeah, those comments have been made throughout the tournament. Of course, I could point out that the Hamilton BHS team also included 15 and 16 year olds. They weren't as big as those Saffers though. There was also a SA ref.

They turned the chat off because there was so much BS in the comments I read for the SF games. I muted the commentary too. πŸ™‚

The Festival hasn't been as good as many thought, so if this is just the first year I hope they get a more international flavour (e.g., an Australian team) in the future. But if it's to be held at this time we'll hear the same comments from the South Africans due to their school year. The Sannix tournament was the same for NZ teams as the team that qualified was usually very different to the team that participated early the following year. I just look at something like this as an opportunity for 1st XVs to tour and play international opposition.

Tough titties to them that they took their opposition too lightly to think they could beat them without their "top side" then.

    "Stiff arm"?

Not sure they know what such a thing is.

SA whinging about not being their 1stXV but only because they play under 19 where as this tournament and the rest of the world play under 18. So their β€˜1stXV’ are all under 19.
    Need to understand that context

I don't think Fijian birth certificates count in NZ so they do it by day of arrival in NZ. πŸ˜‰

Didn't they change the regulations about this, as too many teams were fielding teams full of Year 14s?

I seem to remember a kid this year at my school who thought he was returning to play 1st XV, only to be told he was too old and they wouldn't field him.

    Indeed, here it is: https://www.nzsssc.co.nz/Sport-1/Events/Eligibility-Regulations

I think a few players did return after the covid-interrupted years but most would have been young Yr13s that turned 18 during their return year.

@Bovidae Correct: we had several boys stay that otherwise would have left, so they could play 1st XV, having missed out due to Covid.

The current rules do make it quite hard for Year 14s though. And also those overseas players who drop back a year on arrival in NZ. We've had Year 13s too old to play 1st XV, having arrived late from the Islands.

What is actual rule Chester, I not sure what it is, is it age?
I know a few years ago over in Brisbane there was a stink about boys repeating year 12 (or whatever it was) to play another year of rugby, not I real keen on seeing that happen really, it's not really what 1st XV rugby is meant to be about is it?

From NZRs National policy (NZR) for all competitions for 2022:

Players have to be 18 years old or under (not: under 18) at the 1st of January 2022 to be allowed to play secondary school rugby in 2022. This means that under this policy it's possible for 19-year-olds to play 1st XV rugby as long as they turn 19 after the 1st of January.

    10c2d556-ed09-43a6-9592-6115761ef789-image.png

However, that's the national policy. Specific competition regulations may stipulate something else!
The regs for the Top 4 (now called "New Zealand Barbarians National 1st Xv Championship") state that all but two participating players must be "under 18 years of age on 1 January in the year of the competition". So players may turn 18 years old after the 1st of January, not 19, except for two players if they want to play in the Top 4.

    0af525c0-9419-45d1-bc5f-08a6f4ffb0a4-image.png

That's from the 2019 version of the regulations; I've not been able to find a more recent one, so I assume those rules still apply, except that the invitational coed championship isn't played for anymore.

So you can have the situation that a 19-year-old is allowed to play 1st XV rugby in - for example - the Auckland 1A or North Harbour 1A competition, but cannot play at the Top 4!

There was the situation a few years back when RBHS won the National Title but didn't have any players in the NZ Schools team. That's probably what @Rapido was referring to, as their best players were too old.
