Merry Christmas everyone! Hope everyone gets what they need out of this break

…and hope some of you grumpy pricks cheer up for at least one day a year!

Great Christmas Eve with BiL and family where we made major inroads into a bottle of Cotswold Whiskey.

Planned Christmas breccy has been put back as he's feeling the effects, so feeling a bit smug as I was matching him but feel great 👍

Well, I enjoyed myself a mini triathlon to make room for epic late lunch bludged off the next door neighbours. After that, watched Die Hard, with a few McLeod's beers, bliss. Wife and two of the boys did the Coverack (UK) Xmas swim, nutters!

    Merry Xmas ya filthy animals.

Santa fucked our plans and gave me Covid. We'd dodged it so far (somehow) but it finally caught me. Waiting to see if the missus and kids get it. So that meant no road trip to Napier for Xmas with the family. Hopefully we make it up to Auckland in Jan to see family and friends, but chances are the covids will go through the household so who knows.

    Looking forward to 2023!!

Just checked - Erewhon Station. Must have been a great ride to remember that after all these years. Rode it around Christmas time IIRC.

Ah - were you maybe referring to the Napier-Taihape section of it?
    SH43 = Stratford-Taumaranui - still has 10km of gravel.
But... Napier-Taihape - is 100% sealed now... (although some parts of it... barely), but, back in the day (not that long ago) - large sections were gravel, ....

    • And yeah, stopped off at the old suspension bridge to the side of the road today - and saw it was colloquially known as the Erewhon Bridge, after the local Erewhon County
      20221226_111026.jpg

And then there's Erewhon station - down in the South Island.

    Great pic.

So long ago, I can't even remember what bike it was - poss. the Suzi 380. Was def around Christmas though and memorable. Can remember stopping and there being complete silence apart from the ticking of cooling bike engines.

Oh yeah - if it's the Erewhon of that bridge, on the Napier-Taihape... I think I read somewhere a stat that the centre of that road is the most remote place in mainland NZ? Although that doesn't make much sense. Maybe the least inhabited? The most remote that isn't a dead-end? The least traffic? Something.
It really is some of the closest you can get to "Big Country" in NZ though. 150km, 8 different properties, I think? Canterbury presumably has some pretty big country, I guess. In NZ scales.

Fucking remote, anyway. And I could tell the locals have gotten used to that, with a ute that VERY nearly fucked me up..... obviously thinking "There's a miniscule chance anybody's coming along this road just now, so I'll just start pulling out as I check, and... oh shit."

Hope you all had a great Xmas.

I got a 24-hour gastro bug on Friday night but as I was hosting 17 on Xmas Day still walked nearly 20km over the course of the days washing windows, tidying property prepping food etc.

Xmas Day went well. As partner now has 4 grandkids I had hung 40 giant baubles from the pohutakawa at the front of house. They and neighbourhood tamariki were all very impressed with that and light display so effort was rewarded.

Then to celebrate the first month anniversary of getting Covid sore throat and headache came back. Testing negative but feel like yesterday's dirty dishes.

    Now back at work.

Hope everyone's Christmas was good and the New Year promises great things.

At this point, anything 2023 dishes up can't be as bad as 2022 in the land of NTA.
