Irrational dislike (as an Englishman) - David Beckham. Here's a man that was a very good soccer player, that always gave 100% in playing for England. Single handedly dragged us out of some parlous positions. Is by alls counts a decent human being, but I quite simply detest the bloke.

He's easily my favourite English football player.

Loved how he would never give up on the feild. That qualifyer v Geece circa 2001/ when he put the cross onto Sheringham for the equliser and then free kicked the winner (or equaliser) to qualify. One of my favourite ever games

I always take comments like those above about people saying so and so is a prick/knob or whatever....with a grain of salt, unless I have met them to make my own opinion.

One of my best mates met a few NPC rugby players and said they were all arrogant so and so's, I met them a few days later and thought they were all nice blokes; me and this mate were so alike at that time too, so was interesting we had such contrasting views of the same people.

I'm a big fan of Richie, always have been, but I wont be going to the cinema to see that movie, I'll wait for it to come out on DVD

Interesting the complaints about Richie being boring , TBH it's not something I had given a lot of thought , tended to judge him on his playing ability . But now that I give it some thought , his book didn't exactly excite me , gliding and bagpipes I have little interest in .
But if that is an issue , I wouldn't have thought Read is much of an improvement , his interviews are a bit hum drum

I'd put Pete Sampras in a similar category to Fed Ex. Great player, probably boring as mud off court. I was always a bigger fan of Andre Agassi anyway

Who was the last "charismatic" AB skipper? Shelford? I loved Fitzy growing up and Tana was unique - but neither were overly electrifying (Kapa O Pango not withstanding). Fitzy's punditry on Sky is incredibly dry even in retirement.

Has there been a really successful international skipper in the post 87 era who wasn't a bit demure aside from Johnson? (unless you are really into Sudoku in which case I'll grant you Eales)

The coaches throughout the same era have been total characters though.

Who really cares about "charismatic" captains? As long as they conquer all on the field they can stare blankly at the microphone for all I care. Remember McCaw playing the 2011 RWC on one leg? Remember him getting up at the end of the final after being eye gouged? I'll take that over witty one-liners any day.

Weirdly enough, Nick Cummins actually has quite a good win/loss ratio. 15 played for 11 wins and a draw, for a 77% ratio. Sure it's not All Black quality, but it's pretty good.

I just don't reckon he's quite the character that people make out, he just seems so in comparison to the "Game of two halves/full credit/take each game as it comes" monotone shit you usually get in interviews.
