Plus Lazenby was an absolute gun in the fighting scenes.

Wasn't he former Aus special forces or something?

Yeah a combat instructor apparently. He threw fists on screen more convincingly than any of them ( well Craig comes close but much of that is down to modern editing )

Moore has said he never really liked the fight scenes in the Bond films. That said, he grew up in a tough part of London and could clearly look after himself if he had to by all accounts. There's a collaborated story about Lee Marvin (ex-USM hard man) picking a fight with Rog and getting his arse handed back to him

    Midway (2019)

    • Okay, not bad, almost
    • I actually kinda liked that they didn't stay too close to the 1976 version, but just dropped in some subtle nods to it instead
    • I also understand the laying down of context... the whole "Midway" thing not actually starting until 90 minutes in
    • I do NOT understand, how these people do not understand that tits existed during this conflict. What the actual fuck? Several hot beatches making token appearances... tit-watch: zero. Just... flabbergasted. No excuse.
    • This was a bit more like the movie I expected 1976 to be - a little bit more focus on individuals, a little bit more "Americans are good, the Japs were bad", etc, etc.
    • BUT - overall, I was pleasantly surprised that both were relatively respectful to both seppos/japs.
    • I strongly suspect - commercial reasons. Even the hints at the japs being absolute fluffybunnies in China (I know... reasons) - was probably rather edited in the Jap release.
    • At the end there... it's like they just couldn't help themselves. There was a slight tint of "America, rah rah. Our guys were awesome. Apple-Pie is good. Y'all suck. Fuck yeah. Murica. yeah."
    • Although the continued refusal to accept and acknowledge the Trans-community's contribution to winning the Battle of Midway... offensive.

    Overall - higher than I expected. 3.5 super-effective-AA-guns out of 5 the-flight-board-don't-match-the-conversation.

@Kruse a surprisingly accurate war movie, I really enjoyed it. When I saw in the trailer the guy jumping into the cockpit of an aircraft on the deck, and downing an enemy aircraft I thought 'I ain't watching this bullshit'. Permanently scarred by the U-boat one. However that was a real event, unlike everything in the uboat movie, which I refuse to name

I agree. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it but I thought Austin Butler was astonishing. I can see why he’s one of the favourites for the Best Actor Oscar.

Ach. Nothing to do this evening. Not much I wanted to watch, so revisited LOTR Return of the King.

Fuck me. Just such good cinema.

Edit: But I’d forgotten how saccharine the ending was. 🤮

"Let's watch Military Wives", Mrs M said. "It's about a group of army wives who form a choir". OK, said I, grudgingly, thinking of ways to make the time pass quickly and being aware you have to be extra nice at least once in a while.

But, blow me, what a bloody enjoyable film. Funny, sharp, well-acted and just the right about of saccharine to balance the sadness. And it has Kristin Scott Thomas....

Yeah - last month I watched the entire trilogy "Director's Cut" - I think

    • Each was so fucking long, that I was too smashed by the end of it to review
    • While in most of my reviews of shit movies, I lay a whole lot of blame at the feet of the Editors... in this case, I have to applaud them. My vague memory of the edited cut was a shitload better than the Director's cut. Just so much unnecessary shit.
    • And yeah - that ending. I cite again - so fucking long, I was smashed by the time it happened.
      • I can't even remember... did the movies include Saruman having taken over the Shire?
      • All I remember is the bullshit. "Saccharine" is not saccharine enough to describe those multiple endings.
      • At several times, I was thinking "Peter Jackson was ahead of his time, promoting gay heros. These hobbits are fucking obviously bi-sexual, and there's been a WHOLE lot of homo-hobbit action going on off-screen. Filthy hobbitses."

Well, that sucks. The multiple doses of super-sugar would have made a bit more sense if there was a bit of Scouring in-between.
BTW - the hobbit-bint which gives one of the other hobbits the "you're getting laid, mate" look - was my ex-flatmate. She was perfectly cast.

Bullet Train is the funnest film I've seen in long time.

The ending was a bit average but the getting there was heaps of fun.
