Magnusson gets out first in q1 before the rain hits and gets the best time. Russell crashes and during the red flag the rain hits properly and everyone decides there's no point going back out.

Magnusson and Haas for their first ever pole.

So new season and we're in to 2023. Second season of the new car and after the third practice session of the first grand prix at Bahrain it looks like a much closer start to the season. Surprise is how close Aston Martin looks to the traditional top three of the last decade (Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari).

@antipodean I was flicking channels and saw a little bit of a practice session
I’m not a big fan of F1 as it becomes a procession of slot cars easily but I do admire the technology and fighter pilot like abilities of the drivers (the over paid posturing can fuck off)
Anyway, what I came to add was there were some excellent in garage shots of drivers waiting to go out and you could really see the scale of the cars against the driver. Again I would draw the fighter jet analogy as these machines are beasts. You just don’t normally get that proportional view

They're actually pretty tiny compared to modern fighters, which are huge. They look bigger cos of the new cockpits which are barely open anymore. But their garages are like surgeries, so clean. They are an OCD heaven, nothing out of place. They look like display pieces, rather than work sites. Very interesting to wander around

It's going to be entertaining if Alonso is consistently around the same part of the grid as Hamilton

I’m hoping for an Alonso win tomorrow. He’s on the front row plus Leclerc (12th) and Max (15th) are out of position.

Will be hard to get past Perez though

                        Messy from the FIA

The race goes for 35 laps after Alonso's pit stop, with no penalty given. He celebrates on the podium (his 100th podium)

A couple of mins after the podium ceremony he is given a 10sec penalty. Russell reacts to being promoted to 3rd in the post race media. Then the penalty is overturned a couple of hours later

Not Formula 1 but I'll stick it in here. Mich Evans and Nick Cassidy took the top two sports on the podium in Formula Es first race in Brazil in Round Six of the Formula E World Championship from grids three and four respectively overnight. A great result for our Kiwis!

Impressive from Verstappen. Started in 9th, Perez started 1st but Max still made it look easy

Alonso consistently the best of the non Red Bulls 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th & 3rd

Verstappen is clearly the better driver but him and Perez on different tyre strategies was the big differential yesterday. It was also noted by the Sky comms team the difference in the info given between the two which Horner just waved away. I can see a falling out in the driver relationship coming. Perez has every right to feel mightily pissed off.

Perez would be deluding himself to think the standard practice at Red Bull would change for him. He's #2, like all of his predecessors.

It's not like they deliberately gave Verstappen the better strategy though. Most of the other top teams did the same as Perez and started on the mediums.. then mediums didn't do as well as expected on the new surface

Worth noting that the other guys on hard tyres weren't able to stay out as long as Max

Perez got very lucky in the previous race when Red Bull screwed up Verstappen's pit stop timing

Agree that the strategy thing was not a deliberate favouring, I’m thinking more that with Verstappen starting 9th it was something of a roll of the dice. However, the difference in feedback given to the two drivers was pretty blatant.

@antipodean For sure, but not giving him the full gen alongside his teammate has to irk.
