At a ceremony today medals will be given to whānau of members of the Māori Battalion.

    Well overdue

Very true. I got my Gulf War medal in the mail, was very pissed off!

Putting up with this sorta shit needs a bit more respect IMO! Not that it is a patch on what the WW2 guys went through

Shit mate, anyone who lays their life on the line for the sake of the rest of us at least deserves to get their medals presented in person

My ex-Father-in-Law had the same thing happen to him with his Oman medal - which he had to wait years to get. Was well pissed off.

    Lest We Forget.

There was something really special about last year's observation with the dawn vigil from your driveways.

    Might do that again.

My post is prompted by this Twitty thread by Jim Kayes (who I have never forgiven for that poor taste crack about Alingi on the first episode of The Press Box all those years ago, but makes a good point here and in the following posts):

Isn't there another thread? Sure the mods will join this up if necessary.

I do admit that I liked the driveway thing and will be putting the big poppy that we made back up tonight.

I don't want to lose the group show of support though so will probably still go up the road to dawn service.

Surprisingly enough it's in off topic, rather than 'sports talk' where you've put this one, ironically 😉

@machpants In my defence the last post (no pun intended) on that thread was 5 days ago, and it was the resurrection of the 2016 ANZAC Day thread.

    I would merge - but I'm obviously a technophobe ...

    A question please team.

Have taken leave today and just setting my out of office message, and I wanted to add some sort of salutation to recognise ANZAC Day, like you'd add "Have a Merry Christmas" etc.

Wishing a "Happy ANZAC Day" just doesn't seem appropriate, and adding "Lest We Forget" seems a bit pretentious coming from a pleb like me.

    Appreciate thoughts.

@booboo "Lest We Forget" does sound pretentious-as-fuck... but would be the "standard".
    You could dumb it down?
    "Don't Forget. (War sucks)."

It will be a chilly one tomorrow but at least I'll been wrapped up warmly and won't be being shot at.
Hopefully the skies are clear because at dawn in Queenstown the Southern Cross sits right over the spot on the lake where the ceremony takes place. Pretty spectacular sight.

    Fine by me as well.

I do find it a funny phrase though.

    "Unless we forget"?

I would think that "Let us not Forget" is more appropriate

@Crucial It's from an 1890s Kipling Hymm, so no proper English prose but poetry

Leave it blank. If they don’t recognise ANZAC day they don’t deserve your business.

    ( or you shouldn’t have theirs…..or whatever, I don’t know what you do for a living )

Maybe one for the well-being/ happiness thread but ANZAC day was a cracker. Dawn Service with the waves from the lake lapping was rather poignant. Back home for breakfast and a round of espressos.
Loaded up the trailer with some plants to take over to our new property and everyone decided to come over so the fire pit was lit, lamb chops, crayfish and whitebait devoured along with a nice Pinot from the winery behind us.
This is how I now aim for all ANZAC Days to go.

Dawn service and then bacon and egg rolls in our neighbourhood. Held locally in a cul-de-sac. Followed by two up up the road in the local pub and 6 consecutive hours on the booze followed by a coupe of league games..

work tomorrow might hurt.. but great day. Lest we forget

Myself and my boys did the flags again at our small local service, all went well. Son#2 looked good in his perfects number ones, his choice.

Dawn service at the Soundshell at Napier - very poignant with lots of talk of resilience particularly appropriate after driving through Esk Valley.

Extra special with the black sails of the waka silhouetted against the rising sun as she drifted past.
