Add in Richmond, London Welsh, Rosalyn Park, London Scottish.

Too many obviously in such a tight geographical area, but Richmond and London Welsh were woefully mis-managed with seemingly no oversight until it was too late.

London Welsh was my Dad’s club

Broke his heart when they imploded

Judging by your age, he would have played in or around their golden age?

    Just before the heyday

Still had plenty of success and stars

A precursor to their best period

UK Government to step in with help for England Premier Rugby.

Would be good to see the RFU actually think outside the box, for once take some action and do something for the game - but I'm not holding my breath. Much too easy to pass the buck onto HMG.

In response to the dire financial crisis faced by rugby union and the imminent threat of London Irish becoming the third top-flight club to collapse, the Government has intervened to…

@Catogrande Really shitty to see what has happened to both Wasps and London Irish. I remember them both as successful and happy West London clubs before the money sharks jumped in.

My accountant used to play for Wasps in the 70/80's. Remember his predicting and explaining why it would all go tits-up over a few beers about 10 years ago, and the huge negative impact it could have on Rugby in England as whole.

Did the money sharks make money or was it all a plaything for rich dickheads?

Speaks volumes for the state of English Rugby that every time this thread gets a new post, I start wondering if another England Club is about to go tits-up

    @sparky @Victor-Meldrew

It’ll be interesting to see if the proposed governmental interference initiative will influence the outcome. My guess will be that measures will be put in place too late to save Irish but just in time to hamstring the rest oh English rugby.

And people call me a cynic.

Horrible news I think. I don't wish this on any club, and in long run not good for our game.

@Dan54 three clubs in one year. Championship isn't looking very viable moving forward.

On the plus side, that's one less nation pillaging Aus and NZ talent. Part of me thinks fuck them, for overpaying and going broke.

They spent 900000 pounds per year on Adam Coleman, yeah some poor financials in there!

@Machpants it can't have been that much? Maybe dollars. It was reported that Arnold earning 1.5m dollars in Japan made him the highest paid Aussie. 800 pounds is about the same no?

It was in the Guardian article, so it could be wrong. But that is the number they used

I'm bemused as to why Aussie locks are valued so highly. Whitelock and BBBR must be making a mint up norf next year in that case.

@Nepia isn't it just by virtue of their rarity (locks, not Aussies) and RAs weak bargaining position.

Peak Whitelock/Retallick would be worth a fortune up north, but NZR have the ABs as a bargaining chip.
