SR is a closed shop and it will only start to work when it is run like other international sports comps. The EPL, Top14 and NBA are successful because they are open and clubs compete, which is a very big driver for innovation. Players are contracted by clubs, not the national union or association. SR is nothing like that. Open economies work better than closed economies too. Why would people just getting into rugby watch SR? There are no players from their countries in the comp. Not wanted because of fear it might harm the ABs.

@kiwi_expat I know plenty of people overseas who were new to rugby and ended up watching SR because they like the style of rugby that is played in SR more than that in the NH. More running, fewer boring scrums etc. That's why many of my French friends watch SR, year after year. The reputation of the ABs draws people to watching SR. Also when clubs announce signings from the SH, people get curious and start watching, too. Plenty of reasons. Your constant negativity is more boring than scrums.

The Bounce has been reliably informed that when it comes to New Zealand television ratings, Super Rugby still trumps the Warriors and the NRL by a good margin. In fact, the Warriors brilliant win against Canberra was the fifth-highest rating of the weekend footy, behind the four Super Rugby playoffs. The biggest television audience was the Blues Friday-nighter against the Waratahs.

With the way the media go on you'd think that not a soul watches rugby in NZ and everyone watches the NRL constantly.

Which could be easily countered if the NZRU bothered to release information.

True, although I wonder if Sky want that info released or not?

Yeah, it is surprising that Sky TV/NZR doesn't want to publicly release the viewing figures. SR CEOs have stated they are much higher than last year without going into details.

@Tim rugby as a whole is certainly still largely amateur when it comes to use of that sort of data and statistics they have, but are largely kept secret, for whatever reason.

Interesting, and there is an article on rugby pass by nick bishop talking about this, that battery is the only non loose forward in the top tacklers. Yes he played 6a little bit, but even in lock he plays a very loose forward role. Tackling and linking, defending further out. Imo Scott Barrett is over of the top performers all year, and should be ab captain next. Whether he had the speed to defend off scrums I'm not sure, but you've got to play him in the big games
