    Master Gardener

I love Paul Schrader, he might be my favourite film-maker. This one was a bit average by his standards, but was still the best thing that I've seen this year. A lot of subtle but great shots. Redemption through pussy eating.

    3.5/5

    Sigourney Weaver was very good.

The Whale. Not exactly uplifting or fast-paced, but terrific acting. Well deserved Oscar for Brendan Fraser. Incredible performance

    Avatar - way of water

on disney so finally watched it, just to be clear....very impressive visuals, although my point from earlier in the thread still stands, its SO cgi it actually feels animated

    but...
bringing back the same bad guy?....lazy
immaculate conception of sigourney weavers character just so they can have a +75 year old acting as a tween?...lazy
inventing a new "unobtainium" to justify the genocide of water people rather than forest people?...lazy (why not purely make it about bringing who they saw as a traitor to "justice"?)
how many times can the kids get caught and escape....a least one could have been cut
and 98% of the film being set in the same setting (water)...just made the film very samey...and felt super long, i know films like dune have the same colour pallet for most of it but i felt they made it part of the brooding nature of the film...this was just real blue

dont get me wrong, watched it all, wanted to see what happened in the end...really felt like it cold have done with an editor

Just on the topic of screen time, so many films are waaay too long now. It's like they want to provide value for money but there is so much crap and bloat. I believe they tacked on like an extra 30min to the Little Mermaid which is so dumb for a kids film.

considering how much it costs to take a family of four to a movie, the cheap part of me actually applauds that

After earlier this week watching (listening to):
Matrix Revolutions - ridiculously overdone orchestral score
Ghosted - typical tacky "popular music" score
... I felt obliged to watch No Country For Old Men.
    Fuck - that's a refreshing soundtrack.
I remember the first time I watched it... I didn't realise what they'd done until the end-credits, and when there's a soft track starting to play... clicking: "oh shit".
On a re-watch - even being aware of it... it just fucking works. So good.
    Tit-watch: zero.

You watch a lot of movies without tits. It seems to be making you ornery……

    Can I recommend Showgirls ?

Second Guy Ritchie review in a row: The Covenant

For obvious reason this hits a chord with me, but even accounting for that it's well scripted, acted and shot. The pacing is right on point and it never tries to over egg situations - you feel like thi entire premise is believable.

Watching Light Sleeper (1992). It is, as I remember, very good, but I had forgotten that Sam Rockwell was in it. David Spade too.

I can’t imagine Harrison has ever given a fuck.

Carrie Fisher might beg to differ.

She always is. Recently been trying to find Snowcake (with her & Alan Rickman) to watch. Saw it yonks ago - brilliant film.

Master Gardener now on my list...

    Extraction 2

Someone watched Proof of Life Extraction and thought to do a garbage homage in a mashup style of Matrix Reloaded and John Wick 4.

The Flash and Spider-man: Across the Spiderverse.

So Marvel-Sony and DC essentially did an Armageddon/Deep Impact, White House Down/Olympus is Fallen by releasing to very similarly themed movies.

Both movies are multiverse movies (surely the multiverse fad must come to an end soon 🙂 ), both have multiple versions of characters, and both star actors from the great movie Dope from a few years ago.

I was a big fan of the first Spider-man and this one is pretty good too, but, and I I'll spoiler this (edit: spoiler doesn't work, don't read after the dash) but it has little to do with the actual story so up to you if you look -||it's part 1 of a part 2 and just ends, not even really on a cliffhanger and without telling a complete story (like Empire which did both). It's very jarring if you don't know it's coming.|| Also, whereas the visual style of the animation was great and original in the first one I think they overdid it a bit in this version.

The Flash is one of the better of the Snyderverse movies (in case anyone is aware I'm not a big fan of the Snyder movies with the DCEU Snyderverse). Ezra Miller is pretty good in a dual role and obviously Keaton is great as Batman. The visual effects in this movie are ropey as fuck, which is very odd considering they had lots of extra time between shooting and release because Miller is an idiot.

Anyway, both worth a watch if you're in for some switch of your brain mostly fun.

    Just watched it.
Was really struggling through the prison sequence... and thought "this is going to be UTTER shite... luckily I downloaded The Raid 2 recently" - but once they got past that... I didn't mind it - too much.
Yeah - it's shite. And I get the comparisons... the fucking obsession with bulletproof vests being made of unobtanium or some shit.... so that each fight can just keep going and going - John-Wick-4 stylez.
    But - didn't HATE it.

    • running through the MIDDLE of a fucking prison courtyard riot, with your long-range weapon out... WTF Fucking dumb. Fuck - I've only played solved a very small number of shoot-em-up nerd-games-puzzles, and even I know that I'm sticking to the walls, with my pistol or shotgun out.
    • Going into a train carriage with pretty well placed embrasures exactly for the purpose of current goal - picking up weaponry exactly suited for that same goal - and then running outside into the open in order to use said weapon... was fucking dumb.
    • not back-handing the kid - fucking dumb.
    • Tit-watch: zero. Fucking dumb.
    • Everything else... pretty fucking dumb. But... it's Extraction II... I wasn't going in expecting Burning Paradise. (Do yourself a favour - watch Burning Paradise.)
