IMDB used to be pretty good, they rate the "classics" accordingly most of the time but as a guide for something completely new you have to take each review with a grain of salt.

Due to a head wind on my flight back to Oz from NZ I was able to watch two NZ movies that I hadn't seen on the plane that have been mentioned on here - Mahana and The Dark horse.

I really enjoyed both movies.

Mahana: The shearing gang stuff was interesting because that's where my grandparents hooked up and had an opps, my dad. I've got photos from that era and the movie seemed to capture it perfectly. I thought the ending was a wee bit weird but still a good film.

The Dark Horse: I was a bit worried this wouldn't live up to the hype, but it did and so did Cliff Curtis' performance (interestingly Curtis strolled past me pre-flight). James Rolleston was also good. That kid must be heading off to Hollywood sometime soon as he seems to be in every NZ movie made these days.

It's been a good 12 months for NZ film with these two and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

I think the longer a movie/series is on there, then the more people will vote and therefore outweigh the trollls trying to artificially increase/decrease a rating.

Straight Outta Compton

Really enjoyed this. I had the album on (a copied) tape back in 1992. Listened to it endlessly on my Walkman. That was the same year as the LA riots so I actually got a little bit of what they were going on about. But obviously the main attraction was the gratuitous language. I used to know Fuck the Police and Dopeman off by heart. It wasn't an issue back then but are white guys allowed to repeat those lyrics these days? Plenty of N words. I always liked Easy E. Never realised he was the main dude.

Anyway, thought the film was great but it did seem to me that they threw their ex-manager under the bus a bit to create a villain. They basically said that he broke the group up because he was screwing them over financially, but they were very careful not to be definitive about this.

The hilarious thing about being reminded of this group is that my kids seem to always be watching these appallingly bad family films with Ice Cube as the lead. If you told him he'd be doing roles like that when he was still a rapper in Compton he'd probably pop a cap in yo ass.

Cool flick. I was a bit late to the piece in terms of appreciating the music ( which I definitely do now ) and there's always the awkward fact I'm freckly, blue eyed and white so can't quite pull it off like the Maoris and Samoans. As a budding guitarist I always dismissed rappers as talentless but I couldn't have been further from the truth looking back.....

I love the "Friday" series, very happy memories of watching these back to back with an ex workmate of mine and having a few brews. He is Samoan and we'd happily hurl racist insults direct from that flick at eachother at work ( to he shock of the HR department ). Ice Cube, whilst very funny, was still a bit of a "straight" man to his Dad, Smokey, Day Day, Damon and all the other quirkier characters though.

You're not wrong Rancid, nowadays he's about as 'Gangsta" as Ed Sheeran but to his credit he can take the piss out of himself....

The book sequel to Layer Cake is being made into a TV series with my favourite squinting, scowling Englishman, Jason Statham.

Ice Cube is a funny one. I remember when I first heard the album. Obviously there was no google back then so I had no idea what he looked like. Boyz N the Hood was being shown around that time and I assumed the handsome dude on the posters was Ice Cube. It was in fact Cuba Gooding Jr. I couldn't believe that the Ice Cube I was listening to was the fat little bugger with the weird head.

He's had an interesting body of work but I reckon the decision to cast him as the lead in XXX 2 destroyed any chance of that franchise continuing.

Wolf of Wall Street. Basically 3 long, conscience-free hours of drugs, decent real tits and ass, and screamy speeches.

Was it supposed to be a cautionary tale of some sort? Cos it pretty much looked like he lived a rich boys paradise with very little in the way of consequences. (He served 22 mths in min security prison??)

Hate to think how many people Belfort and co carelessly ruined.

6 ludes out of 10 lines of coke snorted from some chick's ass.
