Just saw the team now, have been less interested in the actual selection since the squad itself was named and I used up all my ire then.

Very surprised to see DMac starting. Will have to check out Planet Rugby to see the Cantabs on there as they must be melting down about Mo not starting.

I never expected SS to get a run. They just don't rate, we knew that last year when he they didn't select him in the ABXV initially. His selection this year seemed like merely a sop to the fans when they knew there was no danger of playing him.

its the most batshit mental few years of Allblack management I have ever seen.

There is no pattern, rhyme or reason to this when you look at his tenure as a whole.

      Injury is his best selector.

I do not understand the latest iteration of the Allblacks. It's just a bizarre project to me these days.

      I don't get it.

It feels like at times and I might be wrong ,

Fozzie thinks , what would Shag do here ?

For example the way he sticks with players he thinks are proven , like Shag did with his ageing champions when there was outside noise to drop them

Really surprised they didn't pick more debutants for this game.

I thought I had too, but then Foster finds a way to irk me.

One thing I agree with Foster on is that he has limited opportunities this year, but then strangely while the rest of this think perhaps now is a good time to give opportunities to form players or form super rugby combinations he plays the same failures from the previous few years.

I think I have recently seen a similar coaching philosophy somewhere recently...ahhh The Freddy Fittler of NZ rugby

If Fozzie listened to much outside noise he wouldn't be able to pick anyone - well maybe he'd have Samisoni and Aaron Smith.

I get what he's done here. First test of the year, ABs are almost invariably rusty. One way to pretty much guarantee we lose this game is to pick a bunch of flashy newbies, ignoring the value of combinations, and make this a Barbarians selection, rather than a test team.

We've got to build the team for this season and that means establishing the core and then plugging a few new guys in and giving them a chance to succeed.

Don't get me wrong - there's a decent probability that we lose this game. This is a decent stretch from our best 23, and the Argies at home are no easy beats. Won't be the end of the world in the greater scheme of things - it will just seem like it... 🙂

@Chris-B ...but what tried and tested combos has he gone with? didn't someone say this is only Dmac 3 game at 10 for the AB's? and when was the last one? i very much doubt he had JB at 12 outside him

BB at 15 and CC at 11....but both a bit out of form? has that locking combo played together before? frizell/savea/cane may have experience together....but mainly its experience of not really firing as a combo (mainly frizell)

surely a "safe" option in the tried and test school of thought would be RM at 10 so that 9-13 combo can continue to solidify....and then SS at 15 so he slotting into a unit in front of him that is familiar with each other

I'm certain their misgivings are about his defence.

definitely, im sure it doesn't affect him at all starting in different positions (and starting is different to covering) from week to week

@Kiwiwomble Pretty much the whole team, with the exceptions of Lord, DMac and Narawa - and he had no choice with Narawa.

He could have picked Retallick and Mo'unga, so he's made some little dice rolls there.

What he hasn't done is pick a bunch of new caps - Williams, Finau, Roigard, McLeod and Stevenson.

I'm guessing we might see one or maybe two of these guys on the bench vs the Boks.

If we lock up the Bledisloe in Test 1, we'll probably see some of these guys getting a test start in Bled 2.

@taniwharugby They reckon playing lock is more physically demanding than 6, so I think it's more likely for a 6 to shift into lock late in the game than a lock to shift to 6.

I reckon Vaa'i will replace Lord and Papali'i will replace Frizell and we'll try to lift the tempo in the final quarter.

well the way Frizell plays we would all agree 😉

@Chris-B I think we know SB will play 80, so he either goes to 6 or I guess Dalton does, giving us our black jack back row
