That Philippines result was a shocker.

Good performances and results though against both Norway and Switzerland. Proud of the Soccer Ferns for battling away.

They really let their level slip, the mindset is a little different when you go into the match considered the favourite

@canefan Panic seemed to set in when they went 1-0 down when they had to trust their processes and their athleticism.

A good learning for the younger members of the squad, but they will never have the chance again of making the second round of a home World Cup.

I felt like we played far too passively in both the Phillipines and Switzerland games. We needed to jump on both teams early, but especially in the case of the Filipinos we left them space and were punished

Columbia are up against ze Germans 1-0. I've only been watching 10 minutes or so, but the Columbians display the best and worst of footballers from that part of the world. Audacious skill, and a propensity for simulation and demanding the ref card the opposition

    What a finish

As good a headed goal as you'll see

    Columbia winners 2-1

Feel sorry for them, ultimately just 1 goal short of going through. Performed better than expected however but yeah, the lack of quality finishing really hurt us in the end.

Still a performance they and we should be proud of, our first ever world cup win is quite an achievement!

An equaliser against the Philippines would have been enough. Tough on Jacqui Hand to hit the post - twice.

@Bovidae exactly - it was a hard, hard watch that game, so unlucky and with a goal disallowed by millimeters as well.

Still I hope that (unlike the last time when the mens team at the FWC where exceeded expectations) NZ football really builds on this momentum and puts more into the game and developing talent.

This is interesting and speaks to how well NZ actually played. They had a larger xG than all of their opponents and who would have picked that before the tournament started - xG is the quality of chances if you're not familiar. The final 3 columns are xG attacking, xG defending and possession.

And the one she put in the back of the net disallowed for a very minimal offside.

Interesting comments from Rosie White. Her remarks about the substitutions were exactly what I was saying while watching the game. 🙂 There needed to be a change of formation (e.g., playing 3-4-3) to get players further advanced) in search of a goal.

I would never have taken midfielder Ria Percival off, she’s such an important person to have on the field throughout to clean things up and to lead the team. You always know she is going to fight tooth and nail for 90+ minutes. There were other players who looked tired and looked like they needed to be substituted before Ria. Of course, it was coach Jitka Klimková’s call, but it was a surprising decision.

Some of the changes were like-for-like (defender Claudia Bunge coming in for Rebekah Stott and midfielder Betsy Hassett for Annalie Longo) and I felt some of the attacking changes could have been made sooner. I would have liked to have seen Grace Jale used in a more central role rather than on the left side when she came on late in the game. You want your tallest players and best headers of the ball in the box as much as possible.

    Stuff

Players played out of position, players not played at all. I sound like a Clegg fanbois, but FFS she knows how to score a goal, when clearly most of the girls do not. We played without boldness and we paid the price

I'm watching the Japan-Spain game. Japan are so organised on defence and have speed on attack. Clinical when they get their chances.

Ironically, I would probably want to finish second in their group and play Switzerland rather than Norway.

Spain being hammered 3-0 by Japan. That scoreline will cheer them up in Palmerston North.
