@Machpants I don't usually read anything in RugbyPass but thought I'd give it a look.

    I stopped once they said

The game itself is barely recognisable now, even from the first World Cup of the professional era back in 1995

    🙄

I think it's excellent. Now with a single glance we'll know who are the floggiest of flogs in a social setting.

Yes, but even the article references:

On the eve of the final it had been announced that the three traditional powerhouses of southern hemisphere rugby, Australia, New Zealand and RWC 1995 hosts, South Africa had agreed a US$550 million deal with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

And despite the shamateur goings-on, it couldn't really be considered the RWC that was professional.

Doesn't invalidate the discussion around the game changing over time, that sort of shit is irrelevant to that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a good deal of Eddie's reputation is immediate success, followed by inevitable decline. So if correct, then the question is if this "smash and grab" for the RWC isn't on track, what confidence that he'll improve the team for a Lions tour, let alone still be on the payroll?
