You do realise that Allardice didn't abuse anyone? It was a joke between friends. I don't know about you but just about every New Zealand male has jokes among their friends which would be unacceptable in other contexts. People call each other fluffybunnys all the time. I don't like that word and, if people use it to me, it won't be taken as friendly. If two other people want to use it as a term of endearment to each other then who cares? Use of faggot, fluffybunny and racial slurs are all acceptable if the person called those names is okay with it.

If it had happened in a strictly private context, I would agree with you, but I think the main issue here is that Allardice said what he said in public and was clearly heard by people not belonging to the group. These people had every right to feel offended, even if he didn't mean to abuse them.

So if you ever jokingly called a friend of yours gay or any other name (such as spastic, retard, idiot, baldy, bogan) it has been strickly in private in case you offend somebody?

I do not call my friends names that are generally considered discriminatory, and if I use non-discriminatory names that may be considered offensive by people outside my group, then usually nobody will care what I say because I'm not a professional rugby player/sportsman, who is considered a role model by some parts of society. I think higher standards apply (in a public context) to public figures who people look up to.

If he was offended or offended on behalf of others (as ridiculous as that seems), perhaps a better course of action would have been to approach the player directly or contact the Chiefs organisation rather than slander him as some kind of criminal on social media and in the media.

Not sure if you've been following the similar drama involving Kevin Roberts but the perennially outraged might have ended his career http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/82669968/saatchi--saatchis-kevin-roberts-in-hot-water-over-gender-diversity-comments

Get a load of the expression on Bono's face! He looks sooooo g g g .... . Ummm.

These younger mates of mine who are especially happy coined a phrase years ago, as the mad correct-speak noose tightened on the more common terminologies familiar to my older generation. Whenever we were out in public and they wanted to alert one to the likelihood that some public figure (usually someone manly admired by myself and my other mate who are the token straights in that group) was an especially happy (and g..) fella they would come out with "Hey Mick, you are aware that Johnny Sattler / Sam Scott-Young / Dermot Brereton is an especially happy fella aren't you?"

They would giggle like girls at my customary response: "Youse blokes really are an evil pack of .oof..rs" - oh dear, I cannot properly finish that snippet.

I fucked up a Tinder date last year by accidentally joking about Gays and Blacks, I thought it was so blatantly obviously a joke but in retrospect I probably didn't read my audience very well ( a bit like my whole time on the fern really ) She was definitely morally outraged on behalf of every ethnic minority on the planet and gave me the evil glare for as long as it took to chop the rest of my Panhead APA.

I didn't even bother protesting with the "I have black/gay/lesbian/dwarf/blind/deaf/religious/disabled friends" line ( apart from the dwarfs I think I do in real life ). Once you're in that deep there's really only one direction you're gonna go......
