Also Freddie wanted two more years as NSW coach when he thought Billy SLater was stepping down.

Billy signed on again yesterday and Freddie quit half an hour later.

Sad day for Queenslanders as NSW surely get an actual coach now.

I don't follow closely.. well I barely follow at all. Both sides seem to have celebrity coaches how much do they actually do?

Is their a figurehead coach and a technical coach at SOO level? Or is league the sort of game that a player can immediately coach without having to learn lessons at club level first?

Is club coaching more about squad building/management?

This was Billy's first go as a coach (well head coach) anywhere and by all accounts was fucking brilliant at it. Real attention to detail. Also helps that he brought in guys like Cam Smith, JT, and Josh Hannay who appears to be a good coach.

A big part of Origin is bring a bunch of quality players together and pointing them in the same direction, and you get a week before each game. So it's man management as much as anything. And selecting. But there is still a level of game planning and attention to detail that is required.

Freddie appeared to be a bit of a vibe guy, creating a nice atmosphere in camp, and relying on established club combinations to get them home. His best "coaching" performance was in the peak "6-again" era where he just selected as many fullbacks as possible and they ran riot against a far inferior opposition. It very much look like he just got out of the way and let Turbo and Latrell carve up.

Good Origin coaches don't necessarily make good club coaches, and vice versa, but Freddie was a shit club coach, and Origin hasn't gone that well either...

Just on this, it's really no different to any other sport. You have to have an understanding of the game to succeed. And just like any other Sport, the absolute genius players tend to not be the best coaches, as they find it hard to pass on how to do things when it was just 2nd nature to them.

The NRL coaching ranks are full of ex-NRL players, but none of them were superstars. Just like rugby, it's the hard working thinking players that go on to be good coaches.
While Billy was a freak of player, he also worked hard at it, and thought his way through his career. All those years studying how Bellamy goes about it would have helped too. Cam Smith would be a fucking great coach. Andrew Johns however would be a disaster. I don't hold out much hope for Benji Marshall either.

The guy already has a book of plays that most commentators are jealous of, but that coaching team is full of ex elite players too

As for NSW, they may actually go with a regular full time NRL coach this time. They are all guessing.

Agree with Edwards and Yeo being the glue for Penrith.

Interestingly for all the talk of SJ, Gus Gould suggested his player of the year was Tohu Harris..similarly with Penrith when SJ and Tohu weren't playing we weren't nearly as effective

Fitter never struck me as being "cerebral" enough to be a coach. He may have matured but he was essentially a very laid back bogan who lucked out in the talent department (first grade at 17) and was happy to coast on that.

I always considered it a real shame that Peter Sterling never became a coach. Maybe the fact he never gave it a shot is a reflection on him not having the stones? Or maybe the Channe 9 gig is so sweet he'd have been made to give it up.

I'm not a big league guy, but I'm looking forward to this. It's farking hot here in Sydders today today, probably still be in the 30's for the game apparently. Last 20 minutes will see some pretty tired lads.

For sure. He's had the best life. It's just a shame that we never got to see what he could bring as a coach.

My care factor for this took a huge drop from the time of that uncalled blatant forward pass last week. 😉

Will probably have it on while arguing with fools like us on the internet.

I also saw some Kiwis discussion that has pissed me off. DWZ has gone to Tonga. Fuck him and his stupid 1980s hori haircut. We also have no hooker as Smith and Marshall King are injured, that blond dude from Newcastle who is apparently a Kiwi is also injured, and guys that could fill in like Kodi Nikorima and Te Maire Martin are unavailable.

The opening 18 minutes has been played at a hell of a pace.
Broncos too many errors so only fitting that Penrith get the first try off yet another error.

    Come on Broncos!

Despite the fact they'e getting through most of their sets the Panthers handling has been average, lots of inaccurate passes.

Herbie should have just caught that ball.

    Ref forgot his whistle.

There’s been a few things ignored that would normally be penalised any other week of the year.

They’re immune to being penalised too, by the looks of things.
