Rewatched The Martian last night (well, started it Tuesday night and finished last night)

    So good.

4.5 potatoes out of 5 disco songs

Last week I watched a Korean movie (The Moon) that has a similar sort of structure, this time about the first South Korean visit to the moon - lots of bad things happen and people need to work out how to solve each one. I actually enjoyed it more than The Martian. The story (apart from the Nasa head, see below) is well structured - the special effects are just amazing and most of the characters are well drawn (apart from the Nasa boss who is basically a cartoon villain)

Low critic, and high audience reviews generally mean it will be a fun if silly watch

    Hidden Strike

    • The title tells you what to expect - a random combination of two words which suggests violence, but doesn't actually mean anything? A B-grade action movie... cool.
    • The opening credits - a litany of chinese funding "companies" - sure, a Chinese-funded action movie, the Chinese are going to be the good guys, or at least the innocents
    • Then... BAM... it's the Jackie Chan / John Cena Buddy-SpecOps movie you never realised you needed, but now that you see it, you realise it was inevitable
    • Many, many chances for plot/tension missed because... fuck it - let's just get Jackie fucking Chan and John fucking Cena together doing their schtick A S A fucking P.
    • It astounds me that it took until the final quarter of the movie for them to have a fully loaded truck flying through the air, because of "AWESOME-PHYSICS!". But they made up for it, by an immediate sequel. Or two.

Jackie Cena/John Chan... what more do you need to know?
Predictable blooper-reel during post-credits? Of course. Idiot.
Jackie Chan jumping around doing stupid physical-comedy kung-fu shit? Duh.
Jackie Chan taking it three steps too far, including perhaps a meta-joke about wire-fu? Yep... done.
John Cena doing "I'm the strong guy" foil? Fuck you for even asking.
John Cena being used as the physical base for Jackie Chan to do Jackie Chan shit? They'd be idiots not to.
I ask again... Jackie Chan & John Cena in sand-land... (they should have just called the movie that), what don't you get?

Cena has been learning Chinese for years.
But I couldn't finish this movie, the dialogue, acting, directing and plot were all stuck in sand.

Watched there’s something about Mary in the plane to Boston. 25 years lads. 1998, exams on at otago uni, that was a great film to break the monotony of study. Still makes me laugh.

I had to look up who TF Cena is, an ex wrestler. I have never seen him in a movie, and I don't think I ever will

Farelly brothers best movie will always be Kingpin….but Cameron Diaz and her lack of bra wearing will always hold a place in my heart.

Cena is good in Peacemaker/The Suicide Squad. Outside of those I think I've only seen him in one other movie.

If we’re talking Wrestlers turned actors it’s hard to go past Bautista. Once you get over the fact he’s essentially a walking, talking brick wall it’s surprising how good his acting chops actually are. Really good in Glass Onion, Blade Runner 2049,Knock at the Cabin etc.

Looking forward to seeing more of him in the Dune sequel too, wasn’t in the first one for long.

@MN5 Bautista is good in supporting roles, but as the lead, not so much.

I did watch this movie, and quite enjoyed it despite the low rating.

    Probably fair.

I can’t believe the Academy missed this one….

    Mission Impossible, Dead Reckoning

Say what you want about Tom, but he knows how to do action films. Sure plenty of bs, but all done well and not as OTT as some and obviously he does his own stunts to make it all the more impressive.

Only criticism is almost 3 hours, but it passes pretty quick

4 falling grand pianos out of 5 car chases

This review of Argento's Suspiria did make me laugh:

Seen this many times but this is the first time I noticed a visible McDonald's in an early shot of Jessica Harper trying to get a cab at the airport, and then I had a chuckle thinking about the witches popping out for Maccas every once in a while.
