tbf the refs have a tough job with the rules as they stand, so much interpretation come into it.

It's not so tough that they can't get basics right. Some of the shit Carley and Raynal have got up to just feels like plain cheating/rigging.

If you've just penalised a team for offence A, don't let the other team off for offence A+ just because they're ranked higher.

    Trouble is - shallow pool.

previous talk of a new winner being crowned, only way that happens now is Argies beating us and then England/SA, which looks quite unlikely.

absolutely cracking set of quarters. For all the supposed whinging about the draw, we got 4 fuckin excellent games out of it.
Not sure Ireland v Fiji, South Africa v England, France v Argentina and NZ v Wales would have had quite the same buzz about it.

                so? (lol, read that wrong)

The only real problem is, if we can't win, there's an enormous chance the winner is South Africa or England. That's a huge amount of disappointment.

Are will missing a trick with the team exiting the Pool stages? A Plate competition to run mid-week in the knock-out stages would be fantastic for the smaller teams. I'd love to see more of the likes of Davit Niniashvili.

Yeah and it's strange that it hasn't happened already, but I guess if you had it this year in France, it'd be fantastic and a huge money maker. Wouldn't work if the RWC was in NZ though eh. So maybe it's as simple as that.

Why wouldn't it work in NZ? Crowds? The minnows games at the last RWC were packed out so I reckon a plate comp being run in the provinces while the finals were in the franchises would work perfectly.

(If not crowds, ignore this post )

Agreed. Qualification for the quarters came down to the final moments of the final of pool game as well.

So which refs get the semis?

With Jaco down and Uncle Mat being rubbish, is it as simple as BOK does SA v ENG and Barnes does NZ v ARG, or will the Georgian boy/Dickson/Pearce/Gardner/Berry come into the reckoning?

In past tournaments, the QF refs have done the semis.

@Bones I wouldnt go as far as saying cheating/rigging, but I do think the complexity of the rules goes a fair way to confusing refs alot of the time, but yeah inconsistency is an issue, I also think that the ARs need to do a better job of assisting, whle the TMO needs to have thier remit amended.

Assistant refs have been shithouse for as long as I can recall, I still have memories of Stuart Dickerson dragging play miles back for some minor or imagined foul play that allowed him the limelight for a few minutes more. I can't remember how it was back in the days they were called touch judges. But I seem to recall that at least offsides and forward passes were picked up

Uncle Mat (I like the colloquial name after he gifted us the win last year)... Barnes is on track for the final, lets be fair. Chances are NZ will get him semis and final (if we get there).

I think the English boys are probably out the running because Barnes will get one won't he...

Down to O'Keeffe, Raynal, Amashukeli and the two Aussies for SA v ENG.

                                  • The latter two have dropped right out the running I think
                                  • IMO, if Raynal gets it, then it should be BOK, because I do think he largely did a pretty good job in what was a bloody tough game to officiate this morning. Also think it is a fair clue the fact he did that game suggests he is ahead in the pecking order, because Barnes could have done that game, and we could have had Raynal/Peyper
                                  • Georgian boy is the major wild card, but I can't see it

The more interesting one would be who does the final if Peyper is injured, and it is NZ v England... by reckoning, you are down to Raynal, Amashukeli and the Aussies, and that would make for an absolute lottery.
