@Nepia said in 50 Years of Star Trek - RIP:
I assume that The Orville has been discussed in the thread already (maybe even by me), I'm watching S2 and will move on to S3. As I don't have Paramount this is the closest to Star Trek I can get and it feels the closest to original Star Trek I've seen, especially as it's mostly stopped being a comedy. What do others think of it?
Orville second season was pretty good. 3rd season was not very good, but with a couple of good episodes.

so, some Picard S3 questions
to start with, i liked it, i like the space battle stuff, I found s2 with the classic (cheaper to film?) going back in time to our time a but lazyraffi....she was the captain or commander and working (at the training academy?) of a ship in S2....and now a spy?
the big bad turns out to be the borg...again, but they dont even mention their friendly borg with a super advanced ship from S2? what happened to that tunnel, kind of felt it was setting up something to happen
eragon dude is mid to late 30's and playing a 23 year old?
we see there is currently an enterprise "F", flag ship of the celebrations, i dont believe we saw any ships get destroyed....but they re name the titan Enterprise "G"....so are there two Enterprises operating?
the Borg are like "THE" bad guys since the Kingons became friendly....no one noticed a borg cube hiding in juptier?.....until twice in the final episode where someone just said....long range scans show a borg cude....no one is doing any scanning normally?
if cloaking devices were that easy to install....why wasn't that one put in one, even if they couldn't reproduce it

A little bit of 90s pop culture ephemera:
To kill themselves, members took phenobarbital mixed with apple sauce or pudding and washed it down with vodka. After ingesting the applesauce/pudding mix, they secured plastic bags around their heads to induce asphyxiation. All 39 were dressed in identical black shirts and sweat pants, brand new black-and-white Nike Decades athletic shoes, and armband patches reading "Heaven's Gate Away Team" (one of many instances of the group's use of the nomenclature of the fictional universe of Star Trek).

As an unreconstructed Michelle Yeoh fan, I approve this trailer.

Just call it something else, nothing to do with Star Trek

@Kirwan How so - or rather how not so? 12 movies, 12 separate TV series, books, comics video games. The canon is extensive and wide ranging, so what discounts Section 31? Genuine question. You seem far more a Trekkie than I am so interested.

The original ethos of Star Trek has been watered down so much from all that canon it's just generic sci-fi at this point.
It used to be have a pretty positive message; pro science, team work, meritoracy, racism was seen as an anachronism (same with nationalism) and it was a colour blind society. Problems were as often solved by diplomacy or intelligence as with violence or space battles.
Now it's all corrupt Starfleet, stupid explosions, stories that don't make sense and as far from a utopia as possible. It's been dumbed down to Star Wars level.
Strange New Worlds has a flavour of the original, so I can still watch that. The rest I've noped out of.
