Far out! I was surprised to see Jesse Ryder had a better average than Steady the Ship... but then I looked closer....

Yet Latham's already scored more test runs than Ryder, which was a bit of a shock to me, as it felt like Ryder was around a lot longer than he was.

that's an awesome effort from taylor. not the greatest attack, but you still need the concentration - and we know he has the ability to score runs against much better attacks (SA), so it's great to see him in the right frame of mind.

Yup, admittedly it's a shit attack but our top players have showed great patience to grind Zimbabwe into the dust. Their only chance was for us to get out playing rash shots, and we haven't given them a sniff. Great to see.

this was what Kane wanted them to do apparently. Just destrooy the attack gently and slowly. Such a change from 'play your natural game'

Did you note that coincidentally Jesse and Jack also share highest scores in test cricket of 201. Jack's was not out, though.

Little Kane edges past Steve Waugh and Sunny Gavaskar on the alltime averages list. Rossco past Neil Harvey and Doug Walters.

Adam Voges and Steve Smith top ten of alltime if they retire now - which tells you something about the current rate of average inflation.

Smith is class but I feel Voges is riding the luck of a sensational test start aka Jimmy Adams and Mike Hussey.

Speak of eras all you want it's still heartening to see one of ours with an average over 50 after a number of tests and another pretty close.

There is a real chance that Ryder wouldn't make the test team on performance alone anymore. It seems silly to say when we have Nicholls at 5 but Ryder's average was dropping towards the end of his test career. I guess it is the not knowing which makes people wonder.

We really need to find a number 5. Either Guppy drops down and we hope like hell he has more success there, or we promote someone from domestic cricket. As another poster said, I can't see Nicholls succeeding in the short term at least - too many technical flaws for test cricket.

Give Nicholls the 1st test vs SA and if he doesn't show improvement I'd play Raval and move Guptill down the order.

I think Bharat Popli might and should get a run, top scorer last year in domestic cricket, a nice average of 50

Will Young is the man to play at 5 imo, but unfortuantely his coversion rate from 50s to 100s is shocking. He's a far better bet than Nicholls but really needs to start tonning up on a more regular basis if he is to catch the selectors attention.

Sure did.

This is what Taylor needs to get his average to 50 after the next one (1st Test v SA):

brackets figures = comparison he needed before the 1st Zim Test. A big reduction!

not dismissed = 154 (518)

once dismissed = 204 (568)

twice dismissed = 254 (618)

Guptill strikes on lunch!

Well, not really - Ervine gets a terrible caught behind given that never looked out to me. Nonetheless we pick up two very handy wickets in the morning session, which was what we needed. Ideally at least three in the next session.

A little bit of payback as Reiffel missed the other lefty hitting the cover off it earlier....

Ish is having consistency problems but Santner gets some good drift and shape. Promising

the lbw before that was a shocker too, clearly heading down leg. bit disappointing as both he and ervine looked reasonably comfortable before getting triggered.
