If we look at the 2023 squad (with some possibilities):

    Hookers (3):
    Samisoni Taukei’aho
Bradley Slater - assuming he stays

Tyrone Thompson

    Props (6):
    Aidan Ross
    Ollie Norris
    Jared Proffit
    George Dyer

Angus Ta’avao/John Ryan (Reuben O’Neill)
    Atunaisa Moli ???

    Locks (5):
    Brodie Retallick (Fiti Sa)
    Tupou Vaa’i
    Josh Lord

    Laghlan McWhannell ???
    Manaaki Selby-Rickit

    Loose Forwards (7):
    Sam Cane??
    Luke Jacobson
    Naitoa Ah Kuoi
    Samipeni Finau

Pita Gus Sowakula (Tom Florence/Jacob Norris/Mitch Jacobson)
    Kaylum Boshier
    Simon Parker

    Halfbacks (3):
    Cortez Ratima
    Xavier Roe
Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi (replacing Brad Weber)

    First five-eighths (3):
    Damian McKenzie
    Kaleb Trask (replacing Bryn Gatland)
    Josh Ioane
    Rivez Reihana

    Midfielders (5):
    Anton Lienert-Brown
    Quinn Tupaea
    Rameka Poihipi
    Daniel Rona
    Gideon Wrampling

    Outside backs (6):
    Emoni Narawa
    Etene Nanai-Seturo
    Shaun Stevenson
    Peniasi Malimali
    Ngantungane Punivai ???
    ???

So 2 TH props, 2 locks, 2 loose forwards if Cane goes to Japan, and 2 outside backs. One of the loose forwards needs to be a 7.

Only if there is a lack of balance in the loose forwards in the squad - again. A lot of 6/8s but not enough 7s.

@ploughboy The Stuff article is saying what you think, i.e., Jacobson will play 7. He's obviously going to be the captain too. Cane's impending move to Japan has been known for a while so they (hopefully) have planned for this and have suitable replacements in place.

Bold move by Cane, he basically cedes his starting spot to Paps and potentially his place in the team altogether.

@Windows97 yeah that could be his AB career done bar injuries. I have the Chiefs favourites for the 2024 Super title but he will leave a large(ish) gap no doubt.

Chiefs don't appear to have signed that many for next year, is the roster finalised or not?

Cane made his Chiefs debut in 2011 so has been playing SR for a long time.

@Windows97 I also thought initially this was him giving up his All Blacks spot, but Razor is a smart man. Would be a major call to dump the current captain straight away, when the current playing group clearly love him. Might well get him offside with a few people when he doesn't need to.

I think it is more likely he slowly phases him out, letting him get to 100 caps (probably not as captain though).

@frugby My thoughts will be that Cane will be in the team, but probably not starting or captain of the team.

Whether he gets back to starting or captain will be dependent on how well whoever plays at 7 goes.

Of course wild speculation on my part 🙂

Nice try. He's off on sabbatical.

The team I'm referring to is the AB's - not the Chiefs 🙂
