well compacted sand is great till it liquefies.

Seriously though, reclamation is hard. Singapore does a bit of it, so do the Netherlands. Dubai is a fascinating place - but I have no urge to visit

look, if I had enough money to race and crash range rovers in the desert after smashing soft drinks, it'd be great fun - but I just can't get excited. SO I guess I'm not a Sheikh.

I so wanted to make a 'no great Sheikhs' joke, but I didn't

Dubai is mega expensive, but it's a great place to visit.

A few friends who live there certainly enjoy it, but none of them rave about it. Peronsally, it's a little bit perfect for me in that it doesn't really have a soul and reminds me a lot of Macau. It's all sounds a bit cliche, but there's only so many cloudless days, expensive boozy brunches & over priced, fake, sporting facilities that I can take.

Zero tax would be awesome though - not that I can complain after 13 years in Hong Kong!

Niue is worse, so many empty buildings. Why? Cos they got access to NZ passports and an airport and 2/3 of the pop left

Wasn't that down to the depletion of their resources (phosphates?) ?

I've been a fan of urban/ industrial decline ever since I saw the unfinished Sheraton in the Cook Islands.

@dogmeat actually that's great news. Gives me a reason to go back and see what else has changed.

I learnt of Point Nemo Island, apparently the most remote spot on the planet.

Situated in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and South America it is closer to the astronauts on the International Space Station than it is to any other human beings.

I assume that is only while the ISS is overhead...

'Damn the Dam' was originally an advertising jingle for Pink Batts.

I don't get the use of the word precise here. From the diagram it appears to indicate a speed range?

Yeah, well, pretty certain English is not his first language. I just took it as 'indicative'.
