It's no great surprise that on cooking shows these days you never see the pressure cooker or microwave being used as the cooking implement of choice.

Pressure cookers are great at cooking tough cuts of meat quickly. So, you see them regularly on shows like Masterchef where there are time constraints that prevent you from using a more 'sexy' method like sous vide.

Heston Blumenthal raves about them for creating stocks and sauces. Reckons they give more depth of flavour than any other technique.

Jamie Oliver has two name branded pressure cooker's. I reckon they're uncool more than underwhelming. Superceded by the microwave for most home cooks. Plus what they really do is save time and most professional kitchens have the time to braise etc so the time saving doesn't matter. Plus a pressure cooker is a bit of an act of faith. You can't check how things are going, taste etc.

I have used them very successfully for things like short ribs where I don't want to spend three+ hours over a casserole.

I never used them for vegetables as you describe as can't see what advantage a pressure cooker offers.

None of this negates your basic premise that 70/80's food was in the main - shit.

@dogmeat To be fair the pressure cooker did do an awesome corned beef.

Though to save "time" Mum would add all the veges in with the corned beef, which saved even more time as you didn't need to add salt to your veges after they'd been cooked in the pressure cooker brine from the corned beef...

Dinners became an exercise in seeing how much I could maximize the corned beef to veges ratio and still get away with it.

The cold cuts of corned beef the next day were delicious however.

Sorry - I know you like her, but perhaps it's time for a dinner party at @Snowy 's.

The cellar is a bit full at the moment.

I met a few people who dissed bacon...

(I would make bacon out of them but it's never like the real thing)

@Windows97 corned beef with the carrots steamed on top is still my favourite mum meal. So good.

Edit: and I now do a slow cooker gammon that ends up remarkably similar.

I used to work at Pak’n’Save when at school - I operated the shit out of the pressure cooker in the deli, we used to make kfc and chips in 10mins like you wouldn’t believe.

Disgusting stuff but so so good

@Tim agree on Btand but your comparison on the panel show …. No way.

Lesser without the grand master Lock, but still the best comedy out there.

@MajorRage Could not imagine anything more by the numbers and cliched. 5 minutes of any of those shows makes me want to kill myself.

@Duluth Post some classic Opie and Anthony as a remedy.

I'm happy to agree to disagree on the caveat that you don't put "7 Days" above them for comedy panel shows.

Then we'll have a REAL problem.

Granny music and a rip-off on 80's Enz. Two reasons to hate them.

I guarantee the first 6 minutes of this won't make you want to kill yourself.

It's been too long since I've watched some Jack Dee
