RIP 2023

Raymond Siddalls died last weekend.
Not a name familiar to many but he basically saved the Auckland rail operation in the early 90's when politicians were ready to close it by firstly restructuring operations so they were more sustainable, then most crucially purchasing new diesel trains from Perth (for their scrap value) and lastly by pushing through a number of improvements that saw ridership increase from a low of 1 million passengers p.a. to over 20 million pre Covid. Without him we wouldn't have got Britomart (and the downtown regeneration it encouraged), the network electrification or CRL.
Interestingly Akl Transport onsold most of the Perth units to Mozambique where they still operate today.

Legend
I know sod all about Football, but he took over in '94 and turned England into a bloody good team.
IIRC, he got the boot by the FA as his face didn't fit - too open-minded, modern and successful I guess.
