Right gents. 3 days in Northland, staying in Kaitaia the first night (arrive late) then Paihia the next 3 before heading back down to Auckland. Day 1 up to Cape Reinga to watch the sun rise then mosey back down to Paihia via a pub in Pukenui for some pies. Next couple of days we've got Waitangi and maybe a half day boat trip lined up around the Bay of Islands, along with JFC's and Jimmy Jack's Rib Shack for some eats. Thinking about a whistle stop to Tane Mahuta on the way down to Auckland.
The boat trip is take it or leave it. Anything else that would be a high priority? Food and activities high on the list.

Family run, very informative ( I've done Waitomo, this stacks up okay ). I can't remember if we had to book but I suspect you can and should because groups are small

I swept the 5 leaves off my patio (okay used the leaf blower) so we yeah we good
Still a fair whack of water around and a few fallen trees but otherwise she's apples

Mmm. Hope you don't have too high hopes for Kaitaia. Having spent my teenage years there, and travelling back to visit the parents over several years I saw the town kind of boom and expand, but my goodness last time I was there (2019) the town seems to have regressed massively. Admittedly the weather was a bit drab which didn't help, so sunshine may shine a better light on the place.
The Cape however was magical on previous visit there (perfect midwinter day, crystal clear water and amazing buzz). Flowering pohutukawas will help too.

I saw footage of someone's car - they parked right near what looked like the biggest tree on their street. Insurance job?

There are beautiful beaches and bays all down the east coast of Northland. There's a wonderful little bay just near Cape Reinga, but I've forgotten its name.
Tutukaka is stunning, and closer to Auckland, Tawharanui is great. Cliff walk at Mangawhai Heads is worth it. Need to time it with the tides though.

If you are travelling south from the Bay of Islands towards Whangarei try turning of SH1 at Hikurangi onto the Twin Coast Discovery Highway (Marua Rd). It takes you on a loop through farmland and onto some of the nice east coast beaches already mentioned. (Sandy, Woolleys and Whale Bays, Matapouri and Tutukaka).
Do not turn of onto the Whananaki Road unless you wish encounter very senior politicians on their summer break. -
@Pepe cheers! Was going to try and take in Tane Mahuta before heading south on Friday so might leave us a bit strapped for time but good alternative option!
