If you are travelling south from the Bay of Islands towards Whangarei try turning of SH1 at Hikurangi onto the Twin Coast Discovery Highway (Marua Rd). It takes you on a loop through farmland and onto some of the nice east coast beaches already mentioned. (Sandy, Woolleys and Whale Bays, Matapouri and Tutukaka).
Do not turn of onto the Whananaki Road unless you wish encounter very senior politicians on their summer break. -
@Pepe cheers! Was going to try and take in Tane Mahuta before heading south on Friday so might leave us a bit strapped for time but good alternative option!

If you're a fan of awesomely meaty pizza and craft beer, stop off at McLeod's pizza barn in waipu. Paihia best eats are CBK, tipsy Oyster, and bad habits. I go there at least twice a year for weekend with the wife
I so wanted to go to the Tipsy Oyster so don’t turn up on a Monday like I did

@Machpants cheers again, Bonesetta is doing flips over Bad Habits, straight to the top of the list. 60 bucks for a tomahawk!
It is such an eclectic place, with great food, booze, t-shirts, off-licence, deli, and butchery.
I had a bacon margarita last time there lol

Erm, anybody done the fly to Cape Reinga trip from Paihia?
I want to drive but kids are not interested in 6 hours in a car (I don’t blame them after the 26 hour flight) so this maybe only option.
Bit baller and not far off 2k for the family, but anybody done it and can offer thoughts?

I swept the 5 leaves off my patio (okay used the leaf blower) so we yeah we good
Still a fair whack of water around and a few fallen trees but otherwise she's apples
Airport should be lovely and green once the water runs off.

@canefan I’m in Paihia. So it’s 2:40 each way.
I’m really torn. I’ve dropped 1k gbp on stupid things before and that’s what this is ….
Just don’t want it be a complete lemon ….
It's a long drive. The reason why I've not done it with my kids yet
