The Bricklayer
Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Nina Dobrev and Clifton Collins Jr.
An ex-CIA agent is reactivated when an extortionist targets the agency. All you need to know about this movie is contained in the following picture.
It's laughably bad. Fight/ action scenes are comically inept. Clifton's portrayal of a presumably "eastern" secret agent is a caricature. Only bright spot is Nina briefly in a red dress.

@antipodean Sounds, especially the title, like a Stath movie that he pilled out of mid filming.

Napoléon
Visually it's a very nice movie to watch. All the actors do an excellent job. The pacing is bang on. Just like a typical big budget Ridley Scott movie. It just didn't feel like something I'd watch over and over again like Gladiator or The Martian.

Shooting Stars
Netflix. The story of the group of kids who formed one of/the best basketball schools in the USA, headlined by some kid called LeBron James. Interesting look at the people who were around him and the journey they took. The changing dynamics of the group etc.
Based on James' book.

Trouble With The Curve
Clint Eastwood as a grumpy old fluffybunny who scouts baseball talent.
The very rootable Amy Adams as his daughter.
Justin Timberlake as her love interest and scout from a rival franchise.
A bit of an exploration of family dynamics, old age, loss, and the sport itself. I found the thread of the baseball stuff a bit in opposition to Moneyball, however this was dealing with finding talent rather than trying to use available talent.
No tits. The most we see is Adams in her underwear. Loses marks for that, particularly as a skinny dipping scene was in the script.

Interesting! Visually it was great but I disagree with everything else, basically.
Thought Phoenix's acting was incredibly wooden (but maybe that's just how Napoleon was in real life) and that the pacing was awful.

I consider Phoenix an "intense" actor in the mold of DDL, so my belief is the lack of emotional range was deliberately affected. Or at least that's how he comes across in most movies I've seen.

The Creator
What a great film. Beautifully shot, well acted, with a great story. The action scenes were not over the top, the emotion it generated was heavy, and by the end the room had got super dusty. 5 Nirmatas out of 5 NOMADS
The Equaliser 3
I enjoyed the first two films, this was a slow burner to a degree but the action was intense when it got going. Pretty as a picture having been set in southern Italy, the killing was brutal. A nice tie in with his ex-co star Dakota Fanning along with the hidden link between their characters. 4 handless corrupt police chiefs out of 5 mafia bosses murdered by hard drugs

L’Amour Braque bonkers French film that answers the question: what happens if a Eastern European director uses the cash he’s taken from the CIA & KGB to fund his crippling cocaine addiction whilst watching a clockwork orange on loop instead of hiring a scriptwriter.
5 Stars as the maniac contrived nude scenes for Sophie Marceau and, sensing even her considerable charms weren’t enough to save him from his psychotic investors, found an even more rootable French bird who understood that preserving her flesh on film was Art.

The Great Escaper with Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson in their final films (though dubious in Caine's case..)
True story about a WW2 Veteran who decided to go to France for the D-Day celebrations without telling anyone. Great if you like the "Old buggers are still young at heart" genre and brilliantly acted but found it pretty formulaic.
3.5 Care Home workers out of 5 Old Soldiers

Red Notice
Awesome lazy comedy action flick. Bullshit storyline of course but
Reynolds’s is hilarious as ever. His line delivery is so good.
Johnson plays the same character he always does
Gadot is just smoking hot …. And a cool character4.5 lazy storylines out of 5 absolutely smoking GG.

Watched a few classics recently: All the Presidents Men with Redford & Hoffman, Witness for the Prosecution with Marlene Dietrich…and the Caine Mutiny with Humphrey Bogart. This film is where Michael Caine chose his onscreen name, replacing White.

That reminds me…..
I watched Get Carter the other night.
Dated, and some pretty dubious stunts and action scenes ( it was the early 70s ) and he is the most cockney sounding northerner I’ve ever heard……but Caine was absolutely cool and ruthless as fuck in this. Definite charisma and screen presence in spades.
Cool film, he played an unlikable arsehole really well.
4 bitters in thin glasses out of 5 big men in bad shape

Along with The Long Good Friday one of the best British gangster movies ever made. Hold their own against any of the great US ones as well.

Fantastic movie, and also a fantastic read.
A movie in a similar vein which doesn’t get the love it deserves is Mr Roberts
Stellar performances from Cagney and Fonda
Going back to Wouk, this is a great read which resonated with me after working 14 summers at two predominantly Jewish Summer Camps in the Poconos of Pennsylvania and the Catskills of NY
