Stripping Jewish cricketer of captaincy marks new low

Sport always has a political dimension, and nowhere is it starker than South Africa. One of the great symbols of post-apartheid reconciliation (so sentimentalised that a film got made about it) was the 1995 Rugby World Cup, in which the white South African captain, François Pienaar, received the...

To be clear, my issue is saying this is 'because he's a jew'. It's not, it's because he's spoken in support of Israeli soldiers. I'd only read headlines when I first replied, and am happy to agree that being stood down as captain is a massive overreaction given the broader context of his actions (the timing, exact wording etc).

I just have a blind spot for the increasing automatic use of 'antisemitism' as a defence for the conduct of Israel. Some personal background - I am Jewish and my grandfather was a German Jewish refugee, who was fortunate to get out before things got really bad, but who lost wider family. The exact nature of Israel's conduct is a political debate that I'm not interested in having (I think it's so emotive that it's pointless online), but I think it's extremely unproductive to just resort to 'its antisemitism to criticise Israel' rather than taking a more principled position based on the exact actions of Israel, Israeli politicians, Israeli settlers, Palestinians civilians, Harmas and the PA, especially when we're seeing a renewed wave of genuine antisemitic neo-nazis around the world.

Apologies, that's probably too much politics. Let's just agree that it's shit for a kid (under 19) to get caught up in this whole thing?

That was one of the best boundary riding catches I've seen!

The final over of that game was quite interesting. The captain was mic'd up so you could hear him and Logan van Beek strategizing on how to try and manage the over (spoiler alert: it went horribly wrong). There have been quite a few times the captain has been mic'd up in the super smash this year, I used to find it a pointless gimmick, but that's actually quite insightful. I can't imagine it'll last, especially with Kelly (the captain) dropping an f-bomb.

India England is good fun. India 106/2. Anderson is timeless.
Gill looks so good, and yet average is literally average.
    Fun to watch.

He looks like he should average 50 ... just gets himself out consistently. Weird.

@nzzp Averaging over 60 in ODIs....

Gets lots of starts that he doesn't convert - lots of scores between 10 and 30.

    No

Plus he never averaged 60 in ODIs.

    Poor comparison

    This post has aged awkwardly……

How bout that new young opener ? 12 sixes in his 214 ? First class average of 77 ! He out Bazballed the Bazballers.

    Wonderful stuff.

I don't think I've cheered on an Indian Side since before Ganguly was in the team. However there's a lot to like about the team (not the admin though - pack of fluffybunnies) but particularly that Jaiswal whippersnapper
