    @Nepia you could have just bought some replacement ear pads and spent a minute swapping them over!

    That sounds like work, I'd have to note the model, research it, go out and find the pads, watch a YT video on how to swap them over. πŸ˜‰

    Actually I still have the headphones in a box somewhere, maybe I'll look into it.

    Exactly what I did with my Bose QC35ii. The trick is to attempt it sober. Much. much easier.

    Yeah did that with my Sennheiser this year, the first one took fucking forever, the second one about ten seconds.

    Just can't do the Sony sounds, so Sennheiser Momentum 4s it is. Noise isolation not as good, but there you go.

    @Kiwiwomble mine were ethically sourced, made from discarded sweatshop children.

    So, these sound great for Noise Cancelling Headphones, but the plastic frame makes massive creaking noises every time I tilt/turn my head or move my jaw.

    A lot of anger is building up ...

    This could go on the tech threads I guess, but may as well start here. Does anyone have an e-reader (kindle, kobo etc) that they recommend. Doesn't have to be that high specced, I just want to read on it. Preferably one I can source quickly in Oz.

    @Nepia

    I've found the Kindle Paperwhite series to be good, but mostly read on a tablet now (low brightness, low colour temperature).

    Seems that the lower cost Kindle has a 300 dpi screen now too.

    Amazon changed the formats you can send books to the device in, but sending ePUB files via Calibre seems to work fine now.

    @Nepia they're not massively different.

    Kindle Paperwhite is excellent. Calibre to handle your library is great. I far prefer reading on e-ink rather than tablet... But you'll figure out what works for you

    Okay, you can eliminate the terribly loud creaking by applying some lubricant to the lower hinges ("Superlube" - silicone grease with PTFE particles - is good).

    Sound quality is exceptional for noise cancelling headphones. Handling multiple devices is a chore, and you may have to re-pair sometimes.

    Battery life is great, but noise cancelling is not top level.

    Not recommended.

    @Nepia my kindle died 48 hours ago.

    WEnt and bought a new paperwhite yesterday. Impressed. The backlight is fantastic, the extra screen real estate is nice, and it's waterproof as well - may yet read in teh bath πŸ™‚

    Screen sensitivity is high, though, so will have to change my habit of brushing against bits of it - it turns pages or opens menus.

    Really good.

    Comparison: Kobo are fine. They access libraries more (at least in Auckland), but harder to manage your own DRM-free ebooks - Calibre doesn't transfer, you have to export books and then copy them across manually.

    @Tim I ended up buying the Sony headphones.

    There are so many problems with the Sennheisers - do not buy them.

    Nah - I've had Kobos for years... and exclusively use Calibre. 99% of my ebooks are DRM-free, pulled out of the raging rivers of the WWW.
    (Well - bit of a headache the first time setting it up - need to download the correct driver, and tweak some config - but not TOO much effort, and once it's running - it's all good.)
    I've never tried a Kindle - I've got a perverse obsession with never supporting the biggest brands for any particular product. Cutting off my nose, in a lot of cases, I suspect.
    But Kobo has always done the trick for me... I'm on about my third or fourth. Which suggests that yes, they do break down - but it's generally been after many years of heavy use and blatant abuse.
    My current one is the (discontinued) LIbra H2O - waterproof, but I think they all are nowadays?... and all the other standard features one would expect. It's slightly too big to fit in some of my pockets - Swanndri inner chest pocket, and motorcycle jeans back-pocket... I'm kinda hoping I break it, so I can buy one of the new models - they've finally started producing smaller sizes again. But... it just takes all the abuse I throw at it.

    Right web nerds - maybe @Kirwan and @Duluth I need some help:

    I've had a site for our rugby club on HostPapa for over 2 years now. It is mainly a point of presence and somewhere I can put important notes so I don't have to keep repeating myself to players.

    I get an email from them to this effect:

    Our automated performance scans have detected that your hosting account has exceeded the resources allocated more than 93 times in the past 2 days. Please see the list of recent faults generated by your 'Web Hosting Business (renegades.net.au)' account:
    ⁃ Limit on entry processes (EP): 93 times

    Wondering what this means?

    These faults are usually caused by one of the following issues:

    • An increase in your web traffic (meaning your website has outgrown your current plan)
    • Malfunctioning scripts
    • Malicious activity, malware infections, or hacking attacks

    We've run the site with them for a bit over 2 years without incident, it should be noted. Perhaps there is an increase in traffic due to new people joining the club.

    I raised a support ticket. The Account Manager came back with "hey let's spend a bunch of money to take care of it" while stating

    Our System Administrators found excessive resource usage faults. This happens whenever the activity generated by traffic, plugins, scripts, themes, etc. surpasses the resource usage limit of your hosting plan.

    And that's fine but are they caused just by volume of traffic or something else? How would I determine this?

    (The options they presented was a service amounting to $60/month or moving to a VPS at anything up to $860 a year, requiring me to spend money the club doesn't have).

    Help appreciated. They said they're going to re-scan on May 1st and will put the site on hold if it is problematic.

    @NTA

    No idea sorry

    I would expect the host to be able to give you better information. But it's not really in their interest if they are trying to up sell

    The site here is unusual.. the non forum stuff is a static website written in vue (with some live fetches) and hosted for free on netlify. So we only care about bandwidth and we're miles away from hitting maxing out the free tier

    @Duluth thinking it could be a plugin I installed recently to WP. Only real change I've made lately.

    Yeah, I would list your recent changes and back them out one at a time, checking in with the host after each.

    My first impression was they are trying to milk you, so may be worth looking at other options. Digital Ocean have been great for us, very predictable costs and plenty of flexibility to build what you want as it’s your server.

    Duluth has had lots of fun building on it.
