There was an article last week where an ex-Aussie Olympian said after they even the athletes go ape with eating Maccas and rooting like it was back in the days of Caligula. Awesome

Australian swimmer Melanie Schlanger has lifted the lid on what really goes on behind the scenes in the Olympic Village.

With just four days to go until the Rio Olympics begins in the Brazilian city, the five-time Olympic medallist has revealed the perks of being an athlete at the Games.

More than 10,000 athletes, 6,000 coaches and team officials will be staying at the Olympic Village - a place where they will eat, sleep and train until August 21.

But besides the accommodation, the 29-year-old freestyler said one of biggest highlights at the Olympics is getting unlimited McDonald's at all hours of the day.

'It's not uncommon to see a large majority of the swimmers from around the world in the dining hall pounding the free McDonald's at 4am,' Schlanger told News Corp.

However, Schlanger said athletes indulging on McDonald's - one of the major sponsors of the Games - don't usually line up for the fast food meals until they have finished competing.

'Each athlete lines up to order 27 cheese burgers, 40 chicken McNuggets, 12 sundaes and a Diet Coke before collecting the food and walking away without needing to pay,' she said.

And McDonald's has proven popular among many high-profile athletes, including Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt who revealed his secret success at the 2008 Olympics.

After spending 10 days in China, Bolt estimated he ate 1,000 chicken McNuggets as he went on to set three world records and win three gold medals.

The dining hall is the size of two football fields, catering to different needs with a variety of cuisines to choose from, including Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and of course Australia's beloved Vegemite.

When the races are over, swimmers would hit the nightclubs around town opened exclusively for athletes - and winning gold is a bonus, according to Schlanger.

'Taking along a gold medal is a sure bet to gain entry to the VIP section where it's free drinks for the rest of the night,' the Queensland swimmer said.

Once competition is over, athletes would go on the hunt for freebies.

Coke vending machines, clothing, movie passes, Beats by Dre headphones, and chocolate bars are some of the free merchandise on offer.

And in addition to the free 450,000 regular condoms provided in the village, Australians have also been given 1,500 double-strength rubber following concerns of the Zika virus.

The condoms contain an antiviral lubricant for 'added protection' designed to combat against the mosquito-borne disease, which can also be transmitted through sexual contact.

'Let's just say there is a very good reason there are so many free condoms in the village. This year I expect Tinder will be very popular,' Schlanger said.

Other perks at the Olympics is being able to meet celebrities, including David Beckham, Roger Federer and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

And despite being part of one of the world's biggest celebrations, Schlanger revealed how most swimmers have spend long, gruelling hours between one and four years ahead of the Games.

'There were times when I didn't even take my dog for a walk in case it affected my performance in the next training session,' she revealed.

'The lifestyle is so dedicated that when the competition ends the celebration becomes everything we couldn't do for the past quadrennium.'

The Olympic Village has 31 new residential towers, each with 17 storeys. The complex boosts a cafeteria, gym, post office, first aid centre and a bank.

The village has been described as the largest in Olympic history.

Wright, whose married name is Wright, announced her retirement from competitive swimming earlier this year.

She is currently studying to become a doctor at Bond University.

Maccas have restricted it to 20 items per person....seriously these are elite athletes, yes they get hungry, but 20 items? I reckon I'd be sick after 3 Big Macs, chips and a drink, and my body isn't an elite machine used to specific diets....

Most athletes go through an absolute shitload of calories per day just to maintain their body shape and fitness level, so I'm not too surprised. I know Rowers eat an absolute shitload at least, I can't imagine what a weightlifters food bill looks like.

Anywyay, some of this morning's NZ medal events (barring bad conditions/wind):
1:11am Women's Kayak 500m Final (Lisa Carrington)
4:05am 470 Women Medal Race
5:35am 49er Men Medal Race
6:20am 49er FX Women Medal Race

There's also the Men's shotput qualifiers at 12:55am, Men's shotput finals at 11:30am, 1500m semis at 11:45am and Lydia Ko's second day.
