One remarkable tactic might be to actually tell the truth in interviews - like "we were really dissapointed we didn't win there" and "yes I think we let them off the hook" and "I think I really underperformed this series, but I'll try real hard to correct that in the next one".

But yes, interviews with the coach's and players are more often than not dire, often the players don't even answer the (very simple) questions posed to them and just say "yes I'm very proud of the boys and their performance" or some varient of that there-of.

Like his Dad, maybe he is planning to get a job in the England setup in the future - he is echoing what they say after they lose.

Good to see Daryl Mitchell's comments rightly get taken apart:

He seems like a super competitive guy, so the comments were out of character

in the current side, coming out and saying "tim southee was a bit shit, and so was that other bloke that shouldn't have been there" is probably a really good way to get cut from the side. Especially when you didn't score that many

I forget his exact words - but even allowing for Glenn Philips level of positivity - some of his end of the day comments were very much rose tinted glasses during the series.

We got a hiding in the first game and let a golden chance to even the score and win a rare home test against Australia slip through our fingers. Literally

I don't see a change of test captain while Stead is still the coach. We'll be needing a Hesson moment for that to happen.

There's not exactly a strong captaincy candidate around, though.

A Latham/Stead combo would be fairly pointless, IMO .

Latham with a brand new coach who has something about him. To whom Latham (or whoever) is a tool. Would probably/possibly work ok.

Forget about Darryl’s comments, when is someone (Weenink or DPL) going to comment that Stead and Southee have the full support of the Board…

The problem is, they genuinely do have the support of the board.

I think the comments from Darryl are being grabbed as a symptom reaction. The reality is we have limited Test quality players, and we need to get the best out of them. We lost that test because we couldn't keep going in the first innings, and we dropped catches, and too many of our bowlers were toothless. Those are structural issues with our cricket - but I see little appetite to seriously address them.
