Ripley (TV Mini Series 2024) ⭐ 8.1 | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Ripley (TV Mini Series 2024) ⭐ 8.1 | Crime, Drama, Thriller

    1h | TV-MA

Haven't seen any of the Ripleys, nor read any of the books.

    Going in blind.

2 episodes in and loving it.

    Acting is top notch.

    Cinematography is sumptuous.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

At least adapt a different book from the series.

I'm at the same point and the cinematography appears to be heavily influenced by the period. The colour (B&W) balance is fantastic. Beautiful.

Some of the acting and dialogue got a little cheesy over the last half of Tokyo Vice season two, but the plot and cinematography were great. Ken Watanabe was brilliant and charming as hell.

Wrapped up well. Great series. Best thing on TV by a mile. Never checked my phone over 10 episodes.

    3 Body Problem.

Pretty damn good, not full of action, just a good storyline and paced well.

Some of the science is beyond me, but for the most part explained well although irrelevant for me to understand the story.

As above, I dont thnk S2 has been green lit yet? WTF? Surely if Netflix dont do it, someone else will pick it up?

I was wondering the same as @Victor-Meldrew

How are the headsets and cases being produced? The San-Ti obviously have some tech on earth, the Sophon is more like a super computer (I think) so they need someone to be making them and delivering them.

I also dont understand the solar sail side of things, how the sail 'filled out' to allow for the atomic propulsion, but the solar sail thing is in other movies too, so assume the science is there.

I could be wrong but apparently they’re waiting to see how the ratings are ?

This scene is one of the best in TV history

@MN5 seems pretty well rated already, more so than plenty of other multi Serieseseses...guess it probably was reasonably high cost to make.

That scene was pretty brutal (they didn't make it as graphic as they could) for someone that hadn't read the books for this or GOT (at the time) it is almost up there with the red wedding.

I think I read somewhere - Netflix's "do we make another season" decision-making process/algorithm - isn't based on such common sense metrics as "ratings" or "viewers"... but some weird other metric.
Something like the percentage of people who started it - and finished it. Which would likely be terrible for anything "sci-fi-ey" ... as there'd be heaps of people who watch the heavily hyped/advertised pilot - see some sci-fi shit, and go "yeah, nah, not for me".
    Ah - here - https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/01/05/the-hidden-reason-netflix-keeps-cancelling-shows-like-1899/?sh=7065023d1a09

Intensive internet research over a couple of pints of IPA indicates no-on really knows and it's either a hole in the plot or to be explained in S2.

Or.....Evans built them as dumb devices and the Sophons provide the software and control them

    Finished Ripley.

    Loved it.

If the previous versions are better then I'm in for a treat. On to them now.

    Edited

Just watched the movie 'The Talented Mr Ripley' and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great cast, great acting, interesting differences in the story.

But much preferred the Netflix version all round.

    Constellation.

Found it too messy, convoluted, slow and predictable. Jonathan Banks was outstanding though.

    The Sympathizer might be interesting

North Vietnam spy The Captain (Hoa Xuande) ends up living in a South Vietnamese refugee community in Los Angeles and finds his loyalty tested in the limited series based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's novel of the same name.

Robert Downey Jr is in it.

@Victor-Meldrew yeah I didn't mind it once I realised what was happening but didn't feel it was clear enough, as you say, messy.

Banks was good and integral to what was going on.

    American Rust

I've watched both seasons so far of this tale about a rust belt town in south-western Pennsylvania, USA. It's typical Jeff Bridges TV series where nuance and complexity exist - practically no-one is without flaw or fault of some kind.

Set up well for a third season which I hope they make.

Easy watch but very tempted to say don't bother because the season ending is fucking abysmal. Maybe wait for season 2 and don't bother if there isn't one.

Whilst Bridges could easily have been cast in it, it's Daniels steering this ship.

    Excellent two seasons.
