And don't get me started on southern based media hyping weather events up here all to hell, making out like we are about to get wiped out, or the whole of cairns has been washed away, when nothing could be further from the truth.
They are already breathlessly on the ground in Townsville, ready to report on this human disaster. And using old footage to create the impression that it's all kicking off, when you can quite clearly see the reporter on the beach in a light breeze and no rain.
    Fuck off you vermin.

The publicity officer for FNQAnon UNLEASHES on the southern media!

People are losing faith in the BOM as their modelling and predictions have been wildly out of touch recently.

It's not helped by fuckwits accusing them of being "woke" and pushing a climate change agenda.

But a lot of public messaging around extreme weather has been very poor this year. The predictions of Jasper being a huge deal when it was barely a wimper. The complete miss of the huge rain event that followed. The all over the shop modelling of this little cyclone that had track maps all over Qld. Even now the track map looks wrong as to meet their model it would have to suddenly have dramatic increase in speed.

Then we had the text message warning system that was breathlessly telling Cairns residents to evacuate and seek shelter 48 hours before the cyclone even hit. A cyclone that barely affected Cairns at all (rain event aside). And warnings about flooding? not so forthcoming.

Farmers are thrilled with the BOM since they sold their cattle on the basis there'd be a long, dry, hot summer coming and instead they could've been fattening their cattle on the abundant grass as a result of all the fucking rain.

And since they can't get a simple long range forecast remotely accurate, any wonder people don't believe them when they announce with near certainty what weather will be like in 50-100 years.

Good news is my lawn is looking good.

Bad news is I have to mow twice a week.

@taniwharugby hell I had no trouble keeping my lawns mowed. Mind you we haven't had a hell of a lot of rain here, and it helps that I can do it midweek as I retired. But I actually played golf both days last weekend without any problems with rain anyway. Mind you looked a but iffy Saturday morning on way to New Plymouth.

I don't know what planet you are on but it sounds pretty serious to me. 7news just mentioned 'Wayne' lost a whirlybird off his roof from the high winds. Get off your high horse and spare the guy a thought.

So looks very likely I'm heading north to help fix up what Jasper fucked up in December.

Much damage to roads and much more damage to water supply.

Find out details of secondment tomorrow.

Watch out @mariner4life I'm passing through ... might get a chance to catch up for that beer.

So, does it ever stop raining up here?

    Rocked up Tuesday.

    Peripheries first ...

Port Douglas is quite a buzz huh? Staying at the inlet end of Marcrossan St. Pubs EVERYWHERE. Have decided my mission is an incremental pub crawl: one beer (one that I wouldn't normally drink) at each licensed venue on Marcrossan, one per night, while I'm here.

Beer only. Can't afford to eat here.

First time around is 15 nights. Next stint may not be so central nor even in Dougie (as I've decided to call it ... Rocky, Bundy, Goldy, Sunny Coast ...) depending on accommodation availability.

But that's not why I'm here.

Getting a feel for the magnitude of the issue. Something in the order of $100-130M of work, and only 13,000 residents. Enter the State Govt and the taxpayers of Australia.

Made it across the Daintree River today up across the "Alex" Range. 18 land slips across about 6km. Not the "we'll just dig out and get rid of the dirt from on top of the road" type, more the "oh, that's where the road went down there" type.

But not as isolated as I thought, yet.

Real push to get roads fully operational for the tourist season (they're open but restricted in hours, and in length of vehicle). Area relies on tourism.

On going longer term availability of accommodation and office space (for a decent sized team that needs recruiting) looks a real challenge as well.

Looks like an intense few months/years coming up.

Expect visits to Cairns will be restricted to passing from Airport, to hire car, to Dougie, and return. But will give the Cairns division of TSF a shout if the opportunity avails itself.

I was up there last year and didn't think food was too expensive. But then again a pub meal is as fancy as I get. Mrs Crazy Horse is a lucky girl.

@Machpants haha yea we had the heat pump come on this morning.

Think it was 5 at our place, no power outage like the scare mongering yesterday.

The new Tauhara geothermal plant is due to finish commissioning on Monday. That will help for the rest of winter. Will be NZ's biggest geothermal plant.
