@Winger He is playing for Hanazono Kintetsu Liners in Japan's Division 1. At least there he will be one of the taller locks running round and has helped his team hold a solid 12th spot on the table. It must be noted that there are just the 12 teams commpeting!

OK It's strange that 2 Canes coaches (Plumtree/ Gibbes) rated him so highly. Obviously, few other coaches do. But Blackwell always gave his best so it's not him to blame

I see Caleb DELANY is showing as 1.97 / (1.98 on Wikipedia)

Hurricanes assistant coach Tyler Bleyendaal will link with Irish powerhouse club Leinster ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Do Canes fans think this will be a big loss? How is he regarded as a coach?

@antipodean I think he was fairly inexperienced when he came into the Canes so not the biggest loss. Hopefully we can pick someone up that can advance our attacking play.

Blyendaal has the potential to become a very good coach, you've got to remember he's only 33 & it was his first coaching gig, most are still playing at that age. he was a very intelligent flyhalf while playing over in Europe & was very unlucky not to get capped for Ireland under Schmidt, also captained the NZ U20 side of 2010, think he will do very well coaching in the URC, a competition where he thrived as a player at Munster.

@ruggabee I'd think it's a money thing - get a few more dollars under his belt then hopefully back to NZ for a more senior coaching position if he gets the results over there.

Laidlaw did inherit a few coaches presumably with a few years left on their contracts. I'm sure he'll have ideas for replacements for anyone who has left, either of their own accord or not.

In addition to these signings it would be perfect if we can re-sign Justin Sangster. That would give us three experienced locks for the next three years. That would then give Tom Allen and Josh Taula plenty of development time so they are ready to take over when some of these other guys move on.

                  Not looking like good news

                  What's Raymond like?

                  https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/350252829/hurricanes-face-nervous-wait-after-asafo-aumua-injures-knee-against-fijian-drua

With Jacob Devery’s season already cut short by injury, it would leave O’Reilly as the only fit hooker from the three that were originally named in the Hurricanes squad for 2024.

Raymond Tuputupu is part of the wider training squad but the 21-year-old has not been seen on the Super Rugby field since he famously made his Hurricanes debut in 2022 after receiving a last-minute call-up and making a mad dash from Palmerston North to Wellington on game day.

@Winger Aumua is going to be a massive loss and probably the one player (aside from maybe Lomax) we couldn't afford to really lose. O'Reilly has been solid but it's Aumua's physicality that will be miss most. Aswell as the fact he's been in career best form.

It's hard to gauge Tuputupu because he hasn't really played much over the last couple seasons. Based on pre-season form he looked solid but he's still really green and will be a massive drop from Aumua. Fingers crossed the injury isn't as bad as first feared. It seems like injuries might be the only thing stopping the Canes this year.

Think Bleyandaal will be missed. Canes current coaching group has a huge bearing on how well Canes are travelling, as opposed to Saders coaches at the opposite ends of the scale. Bleyendaal has always impressed as insightful and creative as player and coach. I guess he wants international experience under his belt, and I mark him for the future in an AB setting.

Honestly that's better news than I thought we'd get.

He could potentially be back come finals time. However, I'm thinking it's more than likely he'll be on the higher end, or more of that estimated time frame out.

                              Hopefully not though!

And, for his sake as well, means he's not going to miss any ABs tests if he's named.

@foobaNZ I heard the NZCIS recovery setup is amazing. If he works hard and uses all the opportunity that facility holds, he could be at the lower end. Let’s hope so.

Tough gig for Aumua. O'Reilly and Devery are a considerable step down, might finally get some straight lineout throws though.

@Tim would be pretty soon, don’t think his team is doing that great. Would be a pretty cool way to go out if he came back and helped us win a title.

                                          This is a big loss.

Getting Coles back if possible is almost a must. But he's a level below Aumua now.

I have been worried about injuries. It's a bigger concern than the Blues form. That was why I was all for resting lots of players vs the FD. Lomax had a rest but Aumua should also have been rested. But, too late now.
