yeah I always thought Walt was an integral part based on an episode where he had a comic book, with a Polar bear in it (similar to a Twilight Zone episode where a kid imagines stuff and it comes true) and how desperate 'the others' were to get him early on.

And he appeared back later to warn, I think, Sawyer.

Watched the first 2 episodes of The Pacific last night. Good stuff! It had a lot to live up to, but its pretty good i thought. I like the character driven stuff mixed in with the carnage. Pretty good gun battles in the first 2 episodes anyway.

I'm completely underwhelmed by the Pacific 5 episodes in yet it seems to be getting acclaimed liked crazy by the critics. I think this just residual love from BoB. I think the lack of a squad focus makes the story a bit disjointed. I sometimes feel they've (unfortunately) taken a leaf out of Terence Malicks book and gone arty farty nearly to the point of style over substance, but in others they've switched to melodrama (I wont say where for the people who are only just beginning watching).

In saying all that it is a highly watchable series (in a kind of History Channel way) but some way below the bar set by BoB. But then again than bar was set impossibly high.

Yep, i am trying real hard not to compare it (if i do, i will probably be disappointed, i love BoB, have it on DVD, and have probably watched it half a dozen times, and whenever it is on TV).

The jumping between squads made it hard to establish who was who (except for the very main guys) but i was assuming it would get easier as it went along. Not so i take it?

I am recording it, to watch, will probably do so over a couple of weeks.

Finished S2 of Deadwood, superb series, worth getting hold of and watching.

Some good acting, 2 characters in particular are superb (Al Swearenger - appropriately named and also Calamity Jane; I know I have already mentioned them, but they are brilliant)

Very loosely historically based (or with characters from the historical wild west)

Yeah that was my assumption but I am now always factoring in incipient senility as an option.

It's just one man's opinion, I could be 100% wrong (US critics tend to disagree with me). To tell you the truth the main characters are easier to follow but the secondary are as confusing as BoB was first time round.

I try not to compare it as well so I'm not sure whether my feelings are from the comparison or actually just for the Pacific itself.

I'm the same, I probably went into it with too high expectations, and although I have E5 to watch I haven't rushed to the TV. It is watchable but it is not BoB by a long chalk

I think you guys bring up a great point by saying how many times you all have seen BoB over the years. Personally, I have seen it at least 7-8 times. That certainly helped familiarize the characters. I find it unfair to compare The Pacific on it's first airing with BoB 10 years on and multiple viewings later. I don't remember specifically vis-a-vis BOB, but I always have a problem with character identification in war films due to the anonymity of everyone wearing the same uniform and helmet. Having to try and integrate three separtate groups/stories (Basilone, Leckie and H/2/1, and Sledge and K/3/5) doesn't help either. Five episodes in we are basically meeting a whole second company that we will follow for the next few episodes. It is like going back to Ep 1, not knowing anyone and being invested in theim. Unfortunately, there was no parallel to Easy Company of the 506th to follow in the pacific due to the nature of the campaigns and the length of the war.

Not saying you are wrong, but you can buy consumer brand HD vidcams these days where the picture quality of everyday-anything (say, your kitty taking a dump in his litter box) is routinely superior to feature-length 35mm movies from my childhood.
Anybody been watching Spartacus, Blood and Sand? A few friends have been talking about it, but I have not been watching.
So I went ahead and caught this show, and couldn't be happier that I did. I watched the first 5 or so in a marathon one cold weekend, and then watched the ramaining 8 as they aired each week. By far one of the most enjoyable 1st seasons of a show I have caught in a while. I looked forward to each airing and watched live (rather than DVRed). Something I haven't done for a show since BSG and The Wire. The first, and maybe 2nd episode is iffy as they introduce the characters and situations. But after you get to know the back stories and motivations, there is some seriously good acting and writing. It also helped that they toned down the blood and nudity some. You see the show is very graphic novelesque like the 300. A little too much in the first two episodes. But it gets much better. I thought you guys would be aware of this show, as it stars a number of NZ and Aussie actors, and is filmed in New Zealand. Possibly the most enjoyable show I have seen in the last year or so.
The first two episodes are online for free on Starz's website in great quality. I don't know if it is geoblocked to US IP addresses or not.
One of my mates is an extra on it - I intend to watch it just to laugh at him, but good to know it's a decent show.
