Auckland stadiums - Eden Park, Western Springs etc

I've been to the caketin for the 7s years ago when the place was rocking. The bowl is not like a shitty cricket ground with their very slight gradients. The bowl at the caketin is made for rugby so is much steeper than a cricket ground. The best views are from the corners of the ground as they're quite close to the corner flag. The not so good views are from halfway - too far from the field.
On a slightly different note, I reckon if there was some environmentally friendly way to build some stands into the volcanic maunga in Auckland that would be quite unique. Obviously can't do it but there is actually a field up Mt Wellington (Maungarei) which is probably a little bit small for sport but not much smaller. Those who have been up Mt Welly know what I'm talking about.

Seriously though, I haven't been - is it in a volcano crater? All I know is the 1994 stories about the final there and the blood shed.
Sounds like NH has been wrecked for baseball too (before they went under). Pity if so.
@nzzp Onewa was great for watching rugby Think like a club ground but with 10,000 spectators. Made a lot of noise. Helped that it was usually champagne rugby.
Couple hundred boys from Hato Petera doing a pre game haka. If it had rained you could start the game at the top of the embankment and end it at the railings
On a fine day (the majority) it was hard to beat you could wander around to follow the action.
After the game it was two minute walk back to Poe which was the teams HQ. Players would join you for a beer and a yarn. Shared many a jug with the likes of Buncey. -

I think the tight measurements refer to where the stands meet the ground rather than the actual footprint. Having one end mostly open would save on footprint too.
So how are they accommodating the rail lines?
Underneath. The existing (temporary) beach road station there will then service both the indoor Arena next door as well as the new stadium.
Every single rail line in Auckland converges on that spot. Western line, eastern line, southern line, the CRL line. I can't think of a better spot for a stadium. Also, the ferries are one stop away outside Britomart.
I just hope Auckland can pull this off. And unlike Wellington (that also has a great location) build a great stadium. Not a piece of crap like the Cake Tin
When it was built, the Cake Tin was the premier stadium in NZ.

It's oval. There's no roof (it was discussed but it was decided it would cost too much). And it looks like a cake tin. A Fletcher Challenge cheap as possible design
The Dunedin stadium is far and away better
and build 12 years later....and surrounded by huge controversy re cost

The idea was impressive, but for me the execution was lacking. The main stand is excellent. However I sat in cramped seats in a temporary style stand at one end. And it was quicker for me to run outside and piss under a tree than to wait in line for the stadium toilets

It is for Rugby and other rectangular codes.
Dunedin, Hamilton and the old North Harbour stadia were all proper rectangles, and top tier rugby watching. Athletic Park was on there too.
Ovals/whatever Eden Park is now are all compromises to squeeze in cricket and boost usage. We have no money, so it makes sense on paper ... but we are finding out that multi purpose stadia are just not as good as specialised ones. And we don't fill them often enough.
In the 90s, a concourse around a stadium with full access for all fans was quite new. Cake Tin was amazing for its time, and is still solid as a venue

What do we actually want from an Auckland stadium? Huge capacity? Roof? Location? Looking cool? It will be necessary to make choices because we can't get everything we want.

I enjoyed watching rugby more at Athletic Park. It was just a pain getting to it and out. And of course, the wind factor.
Wellington had an opportunity to build something great. That was a football / rugby stadium with a roof. And this was pushed strongly by people at the time. An alternative that Wilson Whineray? looked at was at Porirua. This wasn't Oval. But cost cutting and stupidity won the day.
The quote for a top stadium with a roof was NZ$50 million more. It was very hard to get 125million over the line
I hope Auckland don't make the same mistake.

i didn;t realise this was the road we were going down....no, IMO Forsyth Barr is much better than the caketin, you chose the cheap "temp" seats, both permanent stands are steep giving a good view (someone tall in front of you doesnt block your view) and the north stand is even elevated so the front row is only about 15m from the touchline, its awesome

The Cake Tin had various options. One was a rectangular stadium with provision for a roof to be built later. My preferred option. And this cost was not too much more. This option would still be VG today
But it had to be a multi-purpose stadium, And as cheap as possible. Sadly, we had people in control of the money back then who were not smart

i didn;t realise this was the road we were going down....no, IMO Forsyth Barr is much better than the caketin, you chose the cheap "temp" seats, both permanent stands are steep giving a good view (someone tall in front of you doesnt block your view) and the north stand is even elevated so the front row is only about 15m from the touchline, its awesome

I think the tight measurements refer to where the stands meet the ground rather than the actual footprint. Having one end mostly open would save on footprint too.

Every single rail line in Auckland converges on that spot. Western line, eastern line, southern line, the CRL line. I can't think of a better spot for a stadium. Also, the ferries are one stop away outside Britomart.
I just hope Auckland can pull this off. And unlike Wellington (that also has a great location) build a great stadium. Not a piece of crap like the Cake Tin

I didn't choose the seats, that's all we could get. I wasn't alone, I recall an ex-AB lock crammed glumly into a seat a few rows away. If you don't want me to judge the seat I was able to get, get me a new seat. I'm sure the view from the good seats is excellent. But in terms of a complete package the Caketin has more to offer

ultimately im assuming were judging these on rugby...because this is a rugby forum...and a rectangular stadium is always going to have a leg up over an oval for viewing experience. I enjoyed the cake tin, i think its a good stadium especially compared too its contemporaries that we're normally ovals
