At least the NZ games are on at a decent time. It seems that the pitches have been more of an issue in some games.

It's just absolutely full of teams that wouldn't even make minnow status. Was that the same last time? I get they are trying to grow the game but it's a waste of everyone's time playing these teams, they should have a separate tier 2 comp to fight it out in.

The beginning of this comp only seems to be there so players from the higher nations can pad their stats...

@No-Quarter Somehow Zimbabwe aren't there. I guess Uganda knocked them out in qualifying?

    @Chris-B

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/c5113nwv7qqo

....In Uganda there are just 20 clubs for a population of 47 million people. To put that into perspective, Ireland has six times that number. Yorkshire has 800.

While Rashid Khan – who will feature for Uganda's first opponents Afghanistan on Tuesday - prepared amid the flashing lights and deafening noise of the Indian Premier League, Masaba's build-up included days in the office with an early morning net and a late-evening fielding session.

"We find a way to make it work," says Masaba, a Real Madrid fan and the son of a footballer.

"I have to find the time to work the weekends."

The Cricket Cranes qualified for this World Cup with a stunning victory over Zimbabwe in the African qualifiers last year - their first victory over a Test-playing nation.

Three years earlier, they were ranked below Austria and Guernsey, at which stage their then-coach Lawrence Mahatlane sat the squad down and mapped out their route to the Caribbean and United States.

"The guys looked at him like he was crazy," says Masaba, who has never even been to a World Cup match as a spectator.

"But when we thought about it, we just had to beat one of the two higher-ranked sides in the tournament and not lose to the others.

"It was a process to start believing."

@dogmeat Just had a look at what happened.

Zimbabs can't really complain because they lost to Namibia and then got edged by Uganda - whose plan worked perfectly.

Looks like Hamilton Masakadza's little brother Wellington had a bit of a shocker - 6 runs off 13 balls.

I presume Mr & Mrs Masakadza Snr had never been to those places! πŸ™‚

Same number of teams as last time but different format. It used to be bottom 12 play a mini tournament before top 4 from that join top 8 for the main tournament.

Now it's five pools of four, super eights and then semis. I guess this format means the bigger games are spread more evenly throughout and gives lower ranked teams a better chance of making it out of pool play.

Thanks @LABCAT. I would guess that the primary motivation for the change in format is so the USA can actually play a couple of the top sides in an attempt to grow the game there. Having them battle it out in a "best of the rest" comp wouldn't attract the same attention. They would have preferred to be in England's pool though.

Man there's just nothing interesting with the pool play at all, have to wait for the quarters. The only mildly interesting pool is Pool D to see if Sri Lanka or the Bangles get through. The rain is the only thing that may upset things a bit for the top sides.

I thought this was satire but Google confirms it is true.

I can’t wait to hear how Palmerston North ( Palmy to his mates ) goes at international level.

Us, West Indies and Afghanistan is a good tussle too. Pakistan v Ireland maybe interesting, although Pakistan pretty handily dealt with them in a series a couple of weeks ago.
