Has music been over taken as the main social driver by, say tik tok? And is this totally fine and i am just a sad old Gen X-er reminiscing about a youth lost? Or are our youth missing a possibly important social phenomenon that genuinely connects them to others at a crucial time?

I totally get where you're coming from. The distinction between audio and video is completely blurred even if kids like my daughter are using headphones a large part of their waking hours. Maybe that all started with MTV. Now that it's all hand-held and - as you say - readily available, it becomes even easier to consume.

We might have had walkmans, but the batteries ran out on those fuckers, and you couldn't carry unlimited CDs and / or cassettes.

Growing up in rural NSW we didn't get an FM station until the late 80s. We had 2 TV channels until about the same time.
The nearest music store was 50km away and who could afford new-release tapes anyway?

But when you got hold of one it was eye-opening. Appetite For Destruction was a fucking revolution. That's what kids miss out on these days: sustained wonder. They access, consume, and move on from shit way faster than we ever did - because they can!

People can just produce their own music or film now on a laptop and an iPhone and get it out on YouTube. Grow your followers. Get the likes. That's your job now.

There is so much more variety and genres are always emerging. So much information...

I joke my last role title should ahve been 'professional coffee drinker' mixed with 'firefighter'

Isn't it funny how that's what you get the most credit for? Fixing fuckups I mean. They might even be your own fuckup, but when the shit hits, people are more thankful for fixes than the stuff you work on that never breaks.

Mrs TA sent me this - pretty much sums up what I do but without the "Power BI" bit:

I've got two jobs on Linkedin, just not for me but for friends/colleagues.

I quite often get contacted by recruiters or the organisations themselves about jobs. I always respond just in case I need them in the future and will give them the details of people I know who are looking at moving on.

I've never been contacted while I've been looking for work though.

Luckily in my sector of work the wanky stuff isn't too prevalent.

End of year conversation with the boss yesterday. Some Senior managers - who I barely interact with - saw me having a grumpy day or two, so they wanted to give me an adverse performance review.

My boss said "no" to his credit, as the work I produce is top notch - which nobody disputes. But it came with a warning.

I've figured out I'm just a grumpy old man who has been at the same place for 17 years, and need a change. After all, the top notch work I'm producing to help them drive change is not being used by them to drive change, which is extremely frustrating.

Haven't touched my CV since 2015. Yeesh.

My boss, the CEO, missed out on a hefty part of his bonus due to not meeting KPIs for the smooth running of corporate boards and sub-committees. This was due to the fact the secretariat staff left and the CB wouldn't allow the immediate hiring of a replacement due to EOFY reasons. Every other KPI, especially the ones to do with finance and regulatory compliance were massively exceeded yet they focussed on a slightly late agenda and docs for a meeting.

What was worse was that the main owner was willing to pay the full bonus but the Academic Board chair (I've discussed having issues with her on here) led the charge against it and managed to rope in another board member so it wound up taking 50 minutes to discuss.

Anyway CEO threatened to walk over it and they renegotiated a non bonus contract at a much higher rate to keep him happy.

    Legend.

Another reason I'm considering a move is one of my team resigned recently. Very specialty area he works in, and he's fucking good at it, even if he isn't a raucous self-promoter like some of the useless fucks in the teams around us.

After he accepted he gave me the whole story:

    • Trying to get a pay raise for 4 years above the company standard %
    • Working his arse off in a niche field to ensure stuff worked
    • Wanted more clarity around his role and to move onto stuff outside BAU
    • He was on $X in his current job. The new one added 26% on top of $X with more responsibility

Our lot tried to keep him and came back to match the new figure which is more than I'm getting (!), but wouldn't give any more clarity about the role. He couldn't pass up the opportunity (which I'd also pointed out to him don't come along often in his field), so he walked.

I'm not the kind of person to say "pay me this much or I'm out" because you have to follow through on it 😉 and I'm lazy.

But AI is the current buzzword, so I'm going to wait until I get my September bonus, do a bunch of AI courses in the meantime, and bullshit my way into the pay bracket I deserve.

That's what I said, just being drama queen so she gets ride. Unfortunately chopper couldn't land because of low cloud, they have got her a bit lower, chopper had to go away and refuel, so still waiting. I guessing now light maybe a problem.

I just had another look and deleted a bunch of connections who used bullshit hyperbolic headlines. Appreciate perception management in an attention economy, but fuck me these people are deluded lying fluffybunnies. I've also noticed a strong correlation between people with actual skills simply listing their current position e.g. engineer, head of risk and compliance, etc. The others say shit like "AI evangelist", "thought leader" or "I help executives deliver"...
